The Children (Luke 18) craft

This is a really straightforward pop-up card mechanism that shows Jesus removing the barrier the disciples were proving to be between himself and the children. It features the hero graphics provided with the lesson.

My printer was behaving strangely, I apologise for the weak-looking images.

The Children (Luke 18) craft setup

To make this craft, you will need the 1-page template printout, scissors, and a glue. Bast printed on heavy paper or thin card.

The Children (Luke 18) craft cut

Start by adding your colour if required and cutting out the four pieces. You will get better results if you remove all the dotted lines. The children have an optional white border to make cutting easier.

The Children (Luke 18) support

Fold the support along the lines, it should end up looking like a hook!

The Children (Luke 18) craft back

The only other fold is on the background. Fold this tab upwards towards the image.

The Children (Luke 18) craft construction 1

Now to attach the bits altogether. Start with the support, though the order really doesn’t matter. Add glue to the box on Jesus and stick the hook end of the support, grey side downwards, onto it.

The Children (Luke 18) craft construction 2

Next, stick on the children. You’ll see there is a faint image for you to line up if you find that helpful.

Add glue to the box on Jesus and stick the hook end of the support, grey side downwards, onto it.

The Children (Luke 18) craft construction 3

Add glue to the big tab on the background and glue the front piece in place. It’s worth taking a bit of time to make sure this lines up correctly.

The Children (Luke 18) craft construction 4

No matter which order you’ve chosen, the last thing to glue is the second end of the support. Make sure you’ve flattened the support fully and the grey side is facing away from you, then add the glue and close the ‘card’.

The Children (Luke 18) craft final closed

Open close, remove and recreate the barrier, read the words, imagine the reactions.

In the grand scene of kids ministry the mobile has gone somewhat out of fashion, they’ve been overused, and badly at that, but it’s simplicity lends itself to this story perfectly. Here we see Jesus surrounded by children, there are no barriers. the words of Jesus stand proud and clear, a visual reminder that he will always welcome them.

Sadly my printer is behaving strangely so I apologise for the weak looking images.

To make this craft you will need a pair of scissors, glue or double sided sticky tape, some thread, and the printout. this is another one wher printing on thicker paper or thin card would help.

For printing in Colour PDF – 1 page
For printing in reduced colour PDF – 1 page
For printing everything with No colour PDF – 1 page

Start by adding any colour if needed and cutting out the pieces. I’ve once again added an optional white border to make cutting easier.

Match up the pieces. Place one of each pair to one side for now.

Cut three pieces of string or thread. I’ve used embroidery thread but any string will work. Make a loop in the top of one piece of string so the mobile can be hung. Trim any excess.

Lay the three pieces of string on the table and start to place one half of the pieces. Begin with the speech bubble. One you are happy with the layout we can start to fasten pieces in place.

To sticky pieces together you need to sandwich the string between the back and front pieces. Add glue or double sided sticky tape to the remaining half or each pair and then attach in position. Start from the top and work downwards.

Trim the string at the end of each line or items. This means below the 3 smaller hearts and at either topside of the speech bubble.

Enjoy your mobile. It’s very light so it won’t take much to hold it up.

This worksheet about the Chidren meeting jesus looks at the barriers we may place between Jesus and others. It’s a sheet designed to use in small groups though it would be possible to complete independently. The sheet has multiple activities many of which are also discussion prompts, it’s quite a heavy worksheet, apart from the puzzle at the end.

To complete the worksheet you will need something to write with as well as a bible (gospels only).

The PDF can can be downloaded by clicking on the image.

While the theme of welcome ties nicely into the story I’ve tried to include some very simple games that Asher (fictional character from the passage retelling) and his friends would have been familiar with. If you have access to traditional games now would be a lovely time to bring them out, even if they are not of the era.

Obstacle races – this story just begs for the obstacle races that the crowd must have posed to the children. Be creative in your space and link back to the kids running through crowd to the arms of Jesus!

Taarp – This is a traditional Bedouin game from Jordan, and could easily have been a game Jesus was familiar with. The game needs 2 short sticks split lengthways (4 pieces) to play. The sticks are thrown or dropped onto the floor using one hand and score points according to how they land. If they land flat side up they score 1 point – so if all 4 land flat side up you get 4. However, if all 4 sticks fall flat side down you get 6 points. you can draw a counting grid to score or choose a total to reach. If you can’t source sticks then this could work with rulers or other stick like objects.
This game comes from the BBC travel show about Jordan.

Hopscotch – While this may seem an odd choice it’s clear that hopscotch has been passed down through the centuries. Drawing a grid of numbered single and double boxes on the ground is followed by a marker being thrown onto one number. the player then needs to jump in every square in order pausing on the return to pick up the marker. Use masking tape indoors. Experiment with variations, like ‘Sign On the Line’ or separating the squares.

Signs – If you have a slightly older group and haven’t discovered this game yet then the aim of the game is to pass the signs around the group without getting caught. First have each member of the group choose a unique but simple sign, – eg wave 3 fingers, scratch your nose, tug hair. go round the circle a couple of times to make sure everyone knows theirs and a few others. You pass the signs by making your sign followed by a different persons, that person then has the sign. The watcher then stands in the middle of the group and tries to guess who has the sign.

Joined tag – This is a simple game of tag where the person caught must then join hands with the catcher until a long chain of people are formed. Talk about how easy it was to run as a chain, talk about the cost of making everyone welcome, link back to the disciples thinking Jesus was too busy to hang out with the kids. Were the disciples being mean?

Musical statues – Once again a great traditional party favourite and always a good way to expel some energy. Talk about how everyone can dance, it’s not dependant on age or ability. Talk about how it felt to stop, was it refreshing, was it frustrating. The disciples must have thought Jesus spending time with the children was a form of stopping, do you think it was?

Today’s heroes are children because they shows us the gift of Childhood

Essential Teachers notes:
This is kind of a small passage, squished into the chapter and both overlooked and over lifted by different circles in the church. While there is deep theological meaning in Jesus choosing to engage in the marginalized and powerless parts of society here, there is also the much more simple message of welcome that so often children question. It’s important to stress after the story that in some cultures today childhood is much more valued, and that even then children were highly valued by their parents even if not in the wider society.

Main Passage : Luke 18

—————————————-
Have you ever tried to talk to someone who is really busy?
Did they listen?
Did they stop doing things for long enough to talk to you?

Asher and his friends were playing a game outside his house in the shade. He was winning. Asher’s father was travelling with a caravan and his mother was visiting friends. His older sister was watching the game closely, but she wouldn’t play because she was waiting for the baby to wake up.

They heard the crowd approaching long before they saw it. People were pushing and shoving and calling out all sorts trying to get into the middle. It must be a holy man thought Asher, only holy men would have both religious leaders and the sick follow after them. The noise woke the baby and his sister ran to pick it up.

“Lets go see” said Asher eagerly. His friend nodded and they waved to his sister to say they were going.
“Wait!” she cried out, “I’m supposed to be watching you too!”
“Then come with us” called Asher, “perhaps the holy man will bless the baby?”
Sighing his sister loosened one hand from the baby clothes, gripped her skirt up and ran to catch up with them.

As they got nearer they could see that the group moved very slowly indeed. The holy man was Jesus, they had heard of him, everyone had heard of the miracle man. He’d healed the sick and made food multiply. More sick people were trying to get his attention to ask for healing. Some people were trying to get his opinion on big difficult questions. Then there were some big men who looked like fishermen, standing really near Jesus. They seemed to be gently pushing people out of the way so Jesus could continue to walk. Those men must be his disciples thought Asher.

As Jesus came near enough for them to catch glimpses of his face they watched a lady with a tiny baby pushed her way through the crowd.
“What do you want with Jesus?” asked one of the followers with a voice that carried over the noise of the crowd “is the child sick?” the lady looked at this huge man standing like a wall before her. Asher couldn’t hear her reply but he heard the disciple’s response. “Stop bothering the teacher, can’t you see he is too busy to be blessing every child who comes his way!”

Asher heard his sisters sigh, he heard her feet scrape in the stones as she turned around. He knew in a moment her free hand would grab his robe to pull him with her. But still he watched, waiting to see what the lady would do.
“Stop that” came a loud clear voice that was so gentle and yet full of authority. The whole crowd stopped. Asher sister stopped. For a second it felt like even the air seemed to stop moving.
“Let the little children come to me, and do not get in the way.” came the voice again

The woman pushed past the disciple and placed her baby in the arms of the teacher, but Jesus wasn’t looking at the baby, he was looking through a gap in the crowd right at Asher. Asher grabbed his sister and friend and pushed his way through. He had been invited, told to come. Nobody invited children to meet someone this important, nobody. They were children, in their world they didn’t have anything they could offer, and yet Jesus wanted to meet them.

Jesus looked at the confused disciples faces as they watched every child from the crowd run to their teacher.“ Truly I tell you” said Jesus, “Anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” If the disciples didn’t understand then Asher did, Jesus was offering something like a gift, Asher didn’t need to give anything in return. Being a child with nothing to offer wasn’t a disadvantage, it was a blessing.

Today’s heroes are children because they shows us the gift of Childhood
