This Good Samaritan storytelling aid combines the fun of a lift the flap book with the ease of a simple craft even younger kids can make. The best way to use this craft is to make a version in advance so you can show the children how it works and how it tells the story.

(I have a no text version of this craft for our international friends, please email me for a copy.)

To make this craft, you will need the 1-page template printout, scissors, and sticky tape.

Add colour if you printed without, then cut out the main square.

Fold along the long horizontal dotted lines. One fold is a valley fold and the other a mountain fold – there are little symbols on the side of the paper to help you identify which one is which.

Once folded, use a small piece of tape to secure at the edges so it doesn’t come unfolded.

Use a pair of scissors to cut along the four cut lines, to form 3 flaps that can be folded down later.

The craft is now complete, and you can begin to use it to tell the story.

Fold back each flap to reveal the answer to the question – “Did they stop and help the man?”

Once the answer has been revealed, follow the arrow onto the next flap, don’t continue reading down.

After all the flaps are open read the underside of the flaps to complete the story.

The good Samaritan had every reason to keep on walking, stopping may not have been praised by either the community he came from nor that which he was going to serve, it was a costly choice too. These games focus on the practical help he gave the man.

A kind voice – This is a simple and classic game that goes by many names where you need to identify a voice. Seat one volunteer with their back facing the group, alternatively blindfold the individual. Another member of the group then says “am I your neighbor?” as they try and disguise their voice. Ideally the volunteer should respond “yes (insert name of group member), you are my neighbor”. Repeat with a different volunteer. Whose voice was easy/hard to identify? Who really was your neighbor?

The Samaritans journey – have this task based obstacle race incorporate collecting your donkey, packing your bag, adding a band-aid (sticky plaster) onto the injured man, carrying something to represent the man to the inn and slotting 2 coins as payment into a money box. Space out the activities so the kids need to run between them. Talk about how the Samaritan probably planned a much less interrupted and costly journey.

Bandage – This is a classic Halloween game where the person is slowly bandaged in toilet paper until they can’t be seen. It ties nicely to the Samaritan tending the wounds and while it can get messy it’s not difficult to clean up.

Tending wounds – Print out this picture of the injured man – click on image for pdf – and then laminate. Use dry erase markers to draw on bumps, bruises, scratches etc. Give the children a medical kit to care for the man. Use coloured sticky tape or stickers for plasters (band-aids) and cotton buds (q-tips) to gently clean each wound. Talk about how the man may have felt and how the Samaritan was showing him love.

Supporting limbs – have the youngsters get into small groups of 3-4 people. The idea of the game is for the group to support each other so that not everyone has to stand on the floor. Nobody is allowed to sit on the floor. Roll 2 dice, one for number of feet that can be touching the floor, the second for the number of hands that can be touching the floor. ( hints : just pick numbers if you don’t have dice and try balancing on knees) Talk about how sometimes we need the support of those around us.

The good Samaritan is, in many respects, a lesson in empathy and there is no easier way to teach empathy that by having the children act out the story. This little theater craft allows just that – minus the robbers and violence. It is a craft best done in small groups as there is quite a lot of cutting to do.

This is JWL’s second bible theater and you can use them interchangeably if you want to – the other was attached to the Andrew lesson.

As well as the printout,to make this craft you will need a pair of scissors, some craft sticks and a glue stick. You may also need colouring pens if you are printing without colour.

For printing in full colour PDF – 2 pages
For printing in outline only PDF – 2 pages

Start by cutting everything out. Remember to cut the window in the theater front. Some of the pieces, like the grass, don’t need to be cut out exactly, while other pieces may benefit from being given borders.

The theater is effectively a tube. Fold the front piece along the bold lines to form the sides and flap to attach the backdrop. These are all mountain folds and there is a small mountain symbol on each as a reminder.

Add glue to the inside of the flaps so they will be hidden by the backdrop.

Position the backdrop so that the slots on the side of the theater are at the base.

Those slots will hold the extra scene pieces. If you want to make them more rigid then glue craft sticks to the back.

Now we need to add some sticks to our characters too. The sticks can go upwards or to the side, this is particularly helpful for characters that won’t move too much like the man on the ground.

Time to get acting.

You’ll notice there is a graphic of the Jew before he’s attacked. This should allow you to complete the story with him being well again at the end too.

Good Samaritan worksheet
This worksheet about the Good Samaritan is a riot of yet to be colour. Follow the journey of the unfortunate man as you show his emotions turning from hopeful to despair and back again. Get your kids to reflect on the idea of mercy as you see the expectations flip into compassion. Look a bit more closely at the priests special outfit that he valued so greatly and consider how we can ‘go do likewise’ for our neighbors. This worksheet is best for small groups work or independent time.

To complete the worksheet you will need some colouring pens or pencils, a real bible with the Old testament and to turn your thinking caps on!

Today’s hero is the Samaritan, he shows us the gift of MERCY.
Essential Teachers notes:
This is an interrupted story. If there is only one adult open a book / Bible to read the bits in bold then close it to tell the explanation, use this telling as notes rather than a script. Alternatively have someone else read the bold bits. This story stops with a question. Encourage the kids to discuss the question for a moment before moving on.

Main passage: Luke 10
—————————————

There are lots of commandments in the Bible, things God asks us to do. The two most important ones are – to love God and to love our neighbour. But, sometimes it’s hard to work out who are neighbour really is. Are they the person who lives next door? The people in our village, town or city? Or can a neighbour be anyone you meet?

Jesus was asked this question and he answered it with a special story, called a parable. A parable is a story that teaches us something. Sometimes the closer you look at a parable story the more it teaches us.

(open book) A man was going from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers.

(close book) That’s a dangerous road. It was a busy road too. Many important people lived in Jericho and would walk up the long winding road to Jerusalem every day. back to the story…

He was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half-dead.

They took everything, even his clothes. It looks like this story needs a hero to rescue this man.

A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.

The priest knew that God’s word told him to care for those who were in need. This man was in need so why didn’t he stop? Jesus doesn’t say why but we can imagine. If the man wasn’t dead then he may be a trap, the priest could go and help the man and be robbed too. The priest had his special outfit on from a long day’s work in the temple, parts were made of gold and worth a lot of money. No he didn’t want that. The road was busy, someone else could stop and help him thought the priest.

Next came a Levite, when he saw the man, he too passed by on the other side.

A Levite, what’s a Levite? Levite’s helped the priests, they worked in the temple with them. Levite’s were often experts on scripture and the laws of God. So why didn’t this man stop? Perhaps he was thinking if the man had died then he would need to go through a long long process taking 7 days before he could go back to work at the temple. The others at the temple wouldn’t be happy about doing his jobs for a week. If a man of God (the priest) and an ordinary man who knows God’s commands (the Levite) didn’t help him then who would?

Finally, a Samaritan, came to where the man was.

A Samaritan, oh dear this one certainly won’t help. The Jewish people hated the Samaritans. Sometimes the Jews would walk really really long distances just to avoid going near the Samaritans.

When the Samaritan saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. “Look after him,” he said, “and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.”

The people listening to Jesus must have been shocked. A Samaritan, really? And he gave the innkeeper two days wages, then promised more. That’s so generous. It’s also uncomfortable, imagine being helped by someone you hated?

‘Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?’ asked Jesus.

Today’s hero is the Samaritan, he shows us the gift of MERCY.
