As part of this years update Anna is getting a new craft to go with the various labyrinths. If you want something paper based then why not make this little stand up character, complete with a baby Jesus.

This craft comes with a lot of customisation. There are three templates to choose from. The first is line art for the children to colour in. The second has a little bit of colour on the faces and arms, with an accompanying page full of clothes do they can dress Anna and the baby before they put it together. The last option does all the hard work for you and gives you the whole template in colour – great if you are pushed for time. Download 4 page PDF template

Once you have your template you’ll also need some scissors and a glue stick.

Colour, clothe or just cut our your pieces to start with. I’ve used the pre coloured one here to make it simple.

Don’t forget to stick or colour the ends of the arms on the wrong side.

Using the dotted lines as a guide fold the two arms over so they can hold the baby.

To make the stand cut out the long rectangle. Fold one thin end into the middle, crease and then fold the same end piece back to the start again. The dotted lines are there to help you. Repeat with the other side.

We are forming a triangle stand with a crease in the base. do this by gluing the two double folded pieces together. The thicker slightly heavier side will give it a little more stability.

Glue the Anna character to the front of the base, there is no exact position.

Take the name piece and fold along the dotted lines to form hooks. Add a little glue and stick onto the edges of Anna’s dress.

Finally add the baby, you may want to add a little glue to Anna’s hands to secure him in place.

The story of Anna does not hold any obvious craft elements, however, the the idea of contemplation, spending time with God, journeying to a known goal and prayer are wrapped up in the use of labyrinths. There are many ways to make a labyrinth, and while the most memorable are often large scale, finger labyrinths are often used as a way of calming children and those in times of stress. Here are 3 ways to make your own finger labyrinth. Once you have finished your creations try them out using the prayer Jesus taught his disciples.

Use the titles below to jump directly to the method you wish to use or read on for all the ideas.

Stitches, Scores or Scrapes / Snakes

Stitches

When you talk about sewing with children you expect it to be far too time consuming to complete in one session. However, the simplicity of this small finger labyrinth mean’s it can be completed in about 20 minutes, which is actually quite acceptable for many kids ministry groups. The trick is to be prepared.
The children will be sewing 2 lines to create a basic 5 path labyrinth.
Pictured is a Round Woodgrain Mini Flexi Hoop (3 inch) – these cost very little to buy and are quite sturdy for small hands.(mine cost £0.67)
I used material designed for cross stitch so the holes were there already but any material would work.
I used a simple piece of embroidery thread (I didn’t separate it so it’s 6 strands thick)
and as I had a bit of extra time I added a tiny button in the middle.
Print the design and trace it onto the fabric using a pencil. To be honest it doesn’t matter if this shows a little. you may want to use a window of light box to make this easier.

Position the design in the hoop and roughly trim the excess (we can always neaten this later, but if it’s too small and they pull it out it may be hard to re-position), if you trust the children not to pull it out neaten it to about the level pictured here.

Pre thread the needle and put a small knot in the end of the thread. If you are working with younger children then double the thread over and knot both ends in one knot. This will prevent the needle becoming un-threaded. I would also put the tread through the pattern at the starting position.

Working from the edge use backstitch following the line to the middle, there is no need to tie the thread off at the end of this line, simply bring the needle up at the end of the other line and start line 2. Tie a knot at the end of your stitching and you are done.

If you wish you can add a button or sticker to the middle of your Labyrinth.

Scores

If stitching is just too much time, or too much expense, for your group then this is a much faster and cheaper craft alternative. By scoring paper to make ridges, bumps and guidelines you can create a simple Labyrinth from nothing more than stiff paper.

To make the one pictured I used : some brown parcel paper (you want stiff paper), some paper to mount on, a labyrinth printout, a slightly blunt pencil, some sticky tack, a glue stick and some funky foam (craft foam sheet).
The foam sheet is going to be your working surface, it will allow you to create a nice ridge in the paper. If work on a hard surface the ridge will be almost invisible.

Put your brown parcel paper ontop of the foam and then place the printout ontop of that. Place a small amount of sticky tack on the edges of each layer to secure in place. Now comes the decision. if you want your finger to follow the ridge you need to draw a slow firm line on the labyrinth printout pathway. If you want the ridges to be the labyrinth walls you need to follow the walls of the labyrinth on your template.
Work slowly making sure you don’t move the layers and that you draw one continual line. if you draw too many lines it may not work.

When you have completed your drawing remove the sticky tack and check to see if you need to deepen any ridges. Don’t worry about getting pencil on the brown paper you will only see the one side.

Trim leaving a good border and add a small amount of glue to the edges of the paper only. Mount your labyrinth onto paper and test out.

If you want the sheet used for mounting then the PDF is here – pictured size A5

Scrapes / Snakes

The obvious thing to do is to make a finger labyrinth out of clay or something similar like plasticine.
Again you can work your relief in 2 ways. The first is to scrape out your design. the second is to form a thin rope or snake and build up the walls.

Either use the worksheet to get the starting shapes of the labyrinth and draw it freehand onto the base or if you are pushed for time then give the children the bases ready made, print the design onto card, mount it on something sturdy, and get the children to build the walls rather than carve the pathways.

If you use plasticine then the kids can take home their creations immediately. I wouldn’t use salt dough for this activity as it tends to crack more.

This updated3worksheet about Anna is suitable for older age groups, there is very little writing, but lots of discussion, some speech bubbles to fill with ideas (pictures if you wish), and 2 labyrinths. The worksheet is designed to be printed in colour but will work in grey-scale.

The sheet starts with re-examining the story. it combines comprehension questions with discussion starters. The words of Anna are not recorded anywhere and so it makes a good exercise to imagine the content that was spoken or sung. The labyrinth’s have been started and it’s simply a case of drawing circles from the topmost unattached point or line on the right to the topmost unattached point on the left.

observations tray – This is an oldie but really suits the idea of Anna looking for baby jesus. place a random selection of items on a tray, give the children a 30 seconds to memorise what’s there. remove the tray and return it minus one object – what’s missing?

Baby bingo – Print the accompanying PDF sheets and make sure each child has a bingo card. Call out descriptives of a baby for them to stamp off – eg eye colour, clothing style, hair length. Play a line and then a full card.

balloon prizes – take some small objects and push them into balloons. fill the balloon with water. Place a small piece of sticky tape on the side of the water balloon and pierce through the tape and the balloon to produce a small flow of water. the aim of the game is to guess what the object inside the balloon is before the water is all gone. If someone guesses correctly they can throw the balloon at a hard surface so that it breaks and the ‘prise’ is revealed.

Find the baby – find a picture of a baby, or a small doll and hide it in the room using the same rules as hide the thimble.

Anna is today’s Bible hero because he showed us the gift of Prophecy.

Essential Teachers notes:
The story of Anna may seem very brief, and is often tagged onto Christmas teaching programs, but the descriptive Luke gives shows that this is no bit-part in the story of Jesus’ childhood. The story below tries to hint at a few of the clues he left for us there, but I’d encourage teachers to read a little research on the character if they are able. This story is designed to be read in a story-time fashion and it may be nice to have an older woman playing the role of storyteller if possible.

Main Passage : Luke 2

—————————————-

There are many characters in the bible that seem to have just been in the right place at the right time, but today’s bible hero wasn’t like that. She had known right where to be, and so she stayed there, day after day, week after week, year after year, she went to the temple. She went to where the babies were brought as their parents thanked God for their safe arrival into the world. Anna was the name of today’s hero, and Anna was considered a prophet. A prophet is someone who has been told by God something about the future. One day God did what he had promised, after all the years of waiting Anna saw what she had known God was going to show her.

I wonder if you can guess what Anna saw, what she had been promised to see. I wonder if you can imagine the scene…

Anna is old, her hair is grey and her skin is full of wrinkles. She has seen many days in her life, days of childhood, days of marriage, and the day she lost her husband to heaven. She was never supposed to be in this place, this land, she was from a lost people, a people lost as the Jews had divided over time, and she waits for the one who will bring them back together, she waits in the house of the God who would unite them. She is walking in that holy house now, finding pathways on the old worn stones she knows so well. She hears the cry of a little baby and raises her head, the parents smile at her, but as she sees the tiny eyes look at her from the blanket she knows this is not the one. She walks to the parents and tells them they are blessed, turns and walks towards the next infant. A young mother stands with her first-born besides a man who is making an offering for at the birth of his son. She walks towards them and asks to see the child. The mother smiles proudly and parts the cloth gently to reveal the features of a tiny boy. There is nothing that looked great about this child, nothing amazing in his dark tufts of soft hair or his large Jewish nose, but to Anna the heavens just started to sing. This boy, this little bundle of God is the one she had waited for, she takes the child in her arms and starts to echo the prayer of praise hear heart is crying out, so loud is her voice that the room becomes still, amazed all eyes fixed on the strange and wonderful actions of this old woman. The only people who seem unsurprised are the parents, they seem to have almost expected this, and they stand shyly to one side waiting for the event to pass.

Anna knew that God would show her the saviour of everyone, the king of heavens own son would be seen by her eyes. That day Anna held in her arms baby Jesus, met his mother Mary and father Joseph. Anna may not have known when, but she knew where. We know God wants to use us, sometimes he tells us when, sometimes he tells us where, and sometimes he tells us how…. but sometimes God tells us to wait, and like Anna, if we wait, God will always keep his promise.
