Philip and Ethiopia chariot craft

The story of Philip and the Ethiopian has one big obvious craft, a chariot. While some groups will “junk model” this concept, if you want something more sedate and contained, this craft fits the bill.

Philip and Ethiopia chariot craft: setup

To make this craft, you will need the 1-page template printout, scissors, thin card and some paper glue.

Print the template and then back it onto card. The following photos are from an older version of the craft, but the construction is the same.

Philip and Ethiopia chariot craft: the seat

Cut out all the pieces and start assembling by attaching the base of the chariot by gluing the fold-able tabs onto it.

IMPORTANT: the bigger tab is there to allow the chariot to stand, don’t fold it.

Philip and Ethiopia chariot craft: the wheels

The wheels, the glue onto the outside.

Philip and Ethiopia chariot craft: the horse

The card horse is made by folding the large shape along the middle join. A little glue inside the head will help the creature stand upright.

Philip and Ethiopia chariot craft: old version

Take the reins and glue them onto the side of the head. Bend the paper over at the loose end and glue onto the rim of the chariot.

The story of Philip and the Ethiopian is a reminder that the message of the gospel can be confusing to those who have not yet had it explained to them. This very quick and simple craft will give the children a picture to take home where the reminder to share the big story quite literally jumps out at them.

Updated Craft – Old graphics still available.

For this craft you will need the PDF printout (1 page per child), scissors, a glue stick & foam spacers. Additionally, you may wish to add magnets or a ribbon as a way of hanging your finished piece.

Cut out all your pieces. Note :younger children may find the individual hands difficult.

Take the 2 characters and add foam spacers to the back.

Attach both characters to the background.

The scroll is made by folding along the dotted lines to create height.

The long ends can then be rolled or wrapped round something small and round – I’ve used a paintbrush handle here.

The hands glued directly to the scroll.

The scroll is glued directly onto the characters.

The activity shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to complete.

Philip-&-Ethiopian-Worksheet
This worksheet about Philip and the Ethiopian is suitable for those of school age children to work on in pairs of small groups, or for a group of any age to work on as a large group. The worksheet is designed to be printed in colour but will work well in grey scale.

The sheet consists of three areas, a discussion about how to share what you believe, a maze to work on in alone or during the discussion, and the biblical passage the Ethiopian was reading. The sheet would be a good filler activity and probably shouldn’t take more than a few minutes of the lesson.

The PDF can be downloaded by clicking on the image.

Philip is today’s bible hero because he shows us the gift of telling others

Essential Teachers notes:
This story is often accredited to the apostle Philip, though it is much more likely to have been the deacon Philip who actually took part. I’ve tried to leave it slightly ambiguous so you can make up your own mind – though one day I may do the story of Philip and Nathaniel at a later date.

Main Passage : Acts 8

—————————————-

Can you imagine waking up to see an angel. That’s what happened to today’s bible hero. He woke up and saw an angel. The angel told him that he had to get up and travel the road through the desert. Philip, the hero today, didn’t know why he was taking the road but he did as the angel said.

He wasn’t the only one on the road, there was also an important man from Ethiopia. Do you know where Ethiopia is? It’s in Africa. This important man had been up to Jerusalem to worship God at the temple and now he was going home to look after the queens money, because that was his job.

The Ethiopian man had bought a new scroll while in Jerusalem, it was some writings by an old prophet called Isaiah – we have the same writings in our bibles today. As his chariot travelled down the road the Ethiopian was trying to read the scroll. But he was having lots of trouble.

When the Ethiopian looked up he saw there was a man on the road who seemed to be watching him. Philip had felt God tell him that this was the man he was meant to meet and was waiting for the chariot to catch up with him. The Ethiopian told the chariot to stop to find out about this man.

Philip waited until the Ethiopian looked at him again and then asked “do you understand what you are reading?” “No” said the Ethiopian “how can I understand without someone to explain it?”
“Would you like me to explain it?” asked Philip. And at that the Ethiopian asked Philip to join him in his chariot.

As they travelled Philip explained the scroll, and then the story of Jesus. The chariot passed by some water and the Ethiopian shouted to stop. “look here is water” he said “what stops me from being baptised?” SO Philip baptised the man, as a sign that he believed in Jesus. And then Philip was gone, the Ethiopian was left to travel home rejoicing about the good news he had heard.

Philip is today’s bible hero because he shows us the gift of telling others

The hero in this story is Philip, often mistaken as the apostle and more likely to be a one of the deacons commissioned with Stephen. Philip’s story is only half the message for it’s the reaction of the Ethiopian and the Isaiah text that makes this story remarkable.

Chariot races – Divide the children into 2 or more small groups and give each group a strong blanket or large pieces of cardboard. get the smallest member of the group to be the driver and sit on the blanket or board and the bigger members of the group to be horses. The horses must firmly grasp the edge of the chariot with one hand and run. Clear as large a space as possible (preferably around the edge of your working area) and have a chariot race.

Hidden Biblical messages – you will need identical bibles, make a sentence by choosing words in random verses in the bible. write the references on slips of paper. split the children into small teams or pairs and give them the first slip of paper. have a team member run back to you to collect the next reference. While this takes a little bit of time to prepare it’s a good way of making the children familiar with their bibles.

Simon says – this simple childish game is great for this story about passing on the word. don’t be afraid of adding in Christian actions like kneel and pray or read the bible, and actions that make the children move around, like touch a table or run to a wall.

The big map – Ethiopia is just one of the many african countries, taking as big a printout as possible cut the african continent into countries and have the children reassemble. During or after the story remember to point out where Ethiopia is. Example picture to use here
