This Easter morning craft with Mary Magdalene and Jesus is a perfect candidate for the craft bags, unsupervised table, tight-on-time activity that often gets requested at Easter events. The two little pencil puppets / pencil toppers have a tiny background to act our the scene of joy and wonder that took place in the garden all those years ago.

To make this craft, you will need the 1-page template printout, scissors, a hole punch and some sticks or pencils.

Cut out the shapes – you don’t have to be exact!

Punch a hole where the dotted circle appears with the hole punch.

You may need to use the sharpened end of the pencil to gently widen this a little.

Slide Jesus and Mary Magdalene onto the pencils using the two holes.

Place on your background to retell the story.

Mary literally sees the empty tomb, so I couldn’t resist making a tomb craft for this lesson. This one works by spinning 2 cups and it’s not only simple to make but it’s also a perfect end of session craft as you can leave it basic or continue to customise. Magdalene

For this craft you will need the PDF printout (1 page per child), 2 half pint clear plastic cups, scissors, & glue.

For printing in Colour PDF – one page
For printing with No Colour PDF – one page

Colour and cut out as you go along, or do it all at the beginning… your choice.

Start with the hillside. Add some glue along the baseline and stick inside your first cup. If any ends up sticking out do trim it off!

If you have very little children skip the stone slab and move onto the entrance stone. If not then…

Fold the stone slab and make it into a box. You should end up with a box on a ground strip with 2 glue tabs sticking up at the end. Don’t forget to fold the white rectangle and glue it on top for the folded linens!

The stone slab gets glued to the inside of your hill – this cup is done once the slab is in place.

Now for the entrance stone. Grab your second cup and slide it over the first. Glue the back of your entrance stone and stick it in place on the outside of your second up.

(NB : if there is paper between the cups they won’t slide!)

Mary Magdalene has 2 pieces, a holder and a character image. Take the holder and make sure you’ve split the 2 slits.

Add some glue to the glue tab and curl round to make a circle stand. Mary Magdalene will slot into this holder.

Finish your craft by gluing extra trees and the Jesus character onto your outer cup. Encourage the youngsters to tell the story as they spin their cups around.

Mary Magdalene is a great character, sometimes seen as the female Apostle she is the first witness of the resurrected Christ. These games link into various parts of the story, the way she mistook Jesus as a gardener, her role in the group, the oils she bought for a task she never fulfilled and more. Some of these activities are more suited to the start of a session, while others would work better later on.

Who am I? – This is a classic game involving a blindfold and lots of people trying to disguise their voice. Have the child playing ‘Mary Magdalene’ sit in a chair blindfolded, point to one other child and get them to call out “Mary Magdalene” – Can the child with the blindfold tell who it is?

Smell bags – Mary goes to buy oils to anoint the body at the beginning of this story. Use some kind of container, a cloth bag works the best but cardboard boxes with salt shaker holes are just as easy. Then find some familiar smells, shampoo’s, perfumes, soap, chopped vegetables, spices, cleaning products, candles, fruit, flavoured crisps, etc. Either place ‘the smell’ inside the container or onto a tissue inside the container and get the kids to identify it.

Magdalene AMagdalene A
Magdalene BMagdalene B

Where have you put him? – This is part of the questions Mary asks Jesus, thinking he is the gardener. Best played as a warm up activity, use this question to play a game of hunt. Print out the picture provided (click on the smaller image for the bigger one to load) and cut along the dotted lines. Hunt out parts, talk about the picture then lead into the story, reveal the second picture at the end of the story.

That looks like a… – The idea of this game is to identify a picture while only being able to see a small amount. Take a large envelope and cut a small hole in the side (a hole punch will do this neatly, don’t worry about having holes on both sides). slip a picture into the envelope and give it to the children. The children will probably try and more the picture about to see as much as possible.

Plus one – If there was a female apostle it probably would have been Mary Magdalene, have the kids come up with suggestions of other ‘plus one’ characters for groups they know. Have one child stand up and name a group (eg The X-Men) and then have the group come up with a good suggestion for a ‘plus one’ (eg Queen Elsa from Disney’s Frozen).

How could Mary Magdalene mistake Jesus for a gardener? I’d imagine her eyes were full of tears, her head bowed from sorrow, but wait, look deeper and listen, that’s no gardener!

Simple paper-crafts are great because they need the most basic of supplies and with just a little prep, like scoring lines and cutting shapes, even the younger members of the group can produce something quite stunning. Magdalene

For this craft you will need the PDF printout (1 page per child), scissors, & glue. I’d recommend a ruler and map pin for scoring.

For printing in Colour PDF – one page
For printing with No Colour PDF – one page

Colour and cut everything out. Remember to cut out the viewing window too! If you are colouring you may find you get some strange results, encourage your kids to add a small amount of colour, perhaps just green brown and blue to pick out features.

Next you need to fold everything. Most of the folds are simply following the bold black lines, still I’d strongly recommend scoring for a clean result (I use a map pin and ruler: its cheap, easily available and the map pin gives a good grip away from the point.)

The one difficult fold comes with the middle insert piece – the one with the trees and Jesus. First fold the glue tabs then fold the new edges into the middle. You’ll see dotted lines begin to show where the folds should fall.

This craft is best constructed from the front backwards. Lay the viewing window on your work surface with the glue tabs out flat. Add some glue to these tabs.

Take the two side pieces and make sure they are folded with the image on the outside. Open up and place one on the viewing window, bend round the glue tab on the side with the image and stick down.

Open up the side so it’s out your way then repeat with the other side piece.

Onto the middle part. To add glue fold completely and place on your surface with the image side facing you and the glue tabs folded on top.

Turn over and glue the tabs so that the each glue tab is attached to a different side and the flat edge is flush with the bottom of the viewer.

Attach the back piece by adding glue to one tab and sticking down onto the back of the a side piece.

Repeat with the other side so the back lays flush.

To open place your fingers on the inside folds and pull gently, or attach ribbon using sticky tape.

Just wanted to shout out to Manja at Hattifant and the Lilita’s Message Box Card that inspired this craft!

Today’s hero is Mary Magdalene because she shows us the gift of A Lord
Essential Teachers notes:
Mary is a pretty amazing character, she’s mentioned in our scripture much more than many of the apostles, and yet not having been one of ‘the 12’ she is often only studied as a reformed character. Popular teachings about her former life of disgrace are only one way of reading into the text, Mary being a very common name causes much debate here. What we do know for certain is that she was a woman of wealth, a great supporter of Jesus, a very close friend, and a witness to the most important events of the Christian faith.

Main Passage : John 20
Additional passages : Matthew 27+28, Mark 15+16, Luke 8+24, John 19.
—————————————-

There are lots of important people in the bible, some have long stories told about them, some witness miracles, some are mentioned lots of times while the names of others only appear once in a long list. Today’s hero has her name written 12 times in our bibles, that’s quite a lot. She saw many miracles and was the first to witness the greatest miracle of all.

Her name was Mary. Now that’s very confusing, because Mary is a popular name and there were a lot of people called Mary in the bible, but this Mary is also called Magdalene.

Mary travelled around with Jesus and his friends. Before Mary met Jesus her life was horrible, the bible tells us she had seven daemons, which wouldn’t be a nice thing. What the demons were we don’t know, perhaps they were evil things or nasty illnesses. What we do know is that Jesus told them to go, and they left her alone after that. Mary decided to Join Jesus’ crowd, she couldn’t be an apostle because she was a girl, but she could use her money to support Jesus and his friends.

Mary would call Jesus her teacher, her master, her lord and most importantly her friend. She saw Jesus perform miracles and teach crowds, saw him ride in Jerusalem on a donkey as the crowds cheered, saw him upset the religious leaders, and saw him leave on that Friday night to go pray in the garden. When the disciples returned alone she knew something big had happened.

Nobody noticed Mary as she moved through the crowds, as the people around her shouted crucify. Nobody noticed Mary as she pushed through the people to see Jesus struggle with the heavy cross, and nobody stopped her as she joined Jesus’ Mother and the other women near the cross weeping.

Mary stayed there, holding Jesus’ mother, letting their tears mix. The sky went black, the earth shook, but nothing moved them. When the body was taken down from the cross and they followed it. While the men found a stone to seal the tomb Mary sat on the ground opposite the entrance. Sabbath had come, they would have to return on Sunday to clean and anoint the body. Mary had lost her teacher, her master, her lord and her friend. For the first time in a long, long time, Mary’s life felt horrible again.

The sun was only just visible on Sunday morning when the women bought spices and went back to the tomb. They whispered about the stone, how would they move it? But the stone was moved already, the tomb was empty! The women left to tell the other disciples the news.

Mary stood alone outside crying, as she looked into the tomb again there were two shining men sitting where the body should be laid, “why are you crying” they asked her. “They have taken the body of my lord”, she replied, but the men just smiled back at her so she turned away.

Outside she saw a man moving about. Perhaps he was the gardener? Perhaps he had moved the body? “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.” (v15 – NIV) she asked, not even bothering to look at the man’s face.

Then Mary heard something remarkable, something impossible, she heard her own name come from the man’s mouth, but not just her name, the voice, the voice was the voice of Jesus! “Mary.”
“Rabboni!” she cried, which means teacher or master in Mary’s language.

Mary had been given back her teacher, her master, her lord and her friend. She ran to tell the others, Jesus was not dead, Jesus was alive! “I have seen the lord, our lord” she shouted, “I have seen the Lord!”

Today’s hero is Mary Magdalene because she shows us the gift of A Lord
