This weaved Jonathan puzzle craft is deceptive, it looks like it would be easy but actually takes quite a lot of jiggling to get the image to line up. Not suitable for very young groups but a good challenge for the older kids. Once completed it can look amazing with a drop of colour and a bold colour card behind it.

For this craft you will need the one page PDF, a colour card for backing onto, scissors and you may want glue or some sticky tape.

For printing in Colour – with faces on palms PDF – two page
For printing with NO Colour – with no faces on palms PDF – two page

First cut the hands out, be careful and you may find it helpful to increase the split between the fingers a little.

Weave the fingers together using a simple over under, over under, motion. once weaved you will have to slide the fingers around to line up the image.

Once you’ve achieved the image you can fix the hands in place using sticky tape or glue and back onto a piece of coloured card before adding some colour to the picture.

Alternatively, turn the hands over and make your own secret message by writing on the weaved hands then pulling them apart.

The story of Jonathan warning David is a minefield of game ideas, with propelling arrows, unwitting helpers and secret messages there is a wealth of ways your activities can go.

Arrows – launching arrows across your teaching space may fill you with joy or dread, either way the kids will love it. You can be true to the story using tiny bows and arrows (offsite link) or print these arrow heads (pictured) and attaching them to felt tip pens to play drop arrows.

Story clue – This is a great game to launch the session with, the hidden message is made from clues that all need to be ‘solved’ before it makes sense. Number the clues and once the sentence is solved (“Jonathan shoots an arrow”) ask them to look out for why this is an important thing in the story.

1. picture of Jonah with a crossed out h.
2. >x – greater
3. a shoe
4. the letters T + Z
5. na <-
6. some craft sticks made into an arrow shape

68-line art68-line art

Flying messages – This is a silly jigsaw game that relies on your kids being able to fold paper planes. Print the Jonathan line art picture onto multiple sheets using your printers poster settings. Mix up the sheets and hand then out to your kids to fold paper air planes with. Have then practice their throwing skills, you can even set up buckets for them to aim for. At the end open out the planes and join the picture. Talk about how the arrows weren’t Jonathan’s message but what happened after they were shot.

Delivery Messenger – The beauty of Jonathan’s message was that the servant was unaware of what was happening, similarly have a messenger deliver a message across your room. you need a volunteer, a blind fold and a tray. blindfold your volunteer then make a lot of noise like your setting out an obstacle course, but don’t. Give the volunteer a tray with an imaginary object they must transport across the room and guide them around, under, over and through imaginary obstacles. talk about how we follow orders believing the teller.

Chinese whispers – This is a classic game though why it’s accredited to the Chinese I’ve no idea. Whisper a message in the ear of the person to your right and let them do the same until the message has completed the circle… is the message still the same? Talk about how Jonathan needed to make sure his message was clear.

Shoot that arrow and say the code… sometimes you just need a basic craft that won’t tie you in knots trying to figure out how to get it looking right… thank God for the humble split pin. This is a craft for those groups that love colouring, for those who really only have a few minutes and those who know they will have to do all the cutting in advance.

For this craft you will need both pages of the PDF, a craft knife, scissors and a split pin.

For printing in Colour PDF – two page
For printing with NO Colour PDF – two page

I’d recommend construction before colouring if you are using the no colour printing option. First cut out your wheel.

Cut along the dotted line with a craft knife. If you don’t have a craft knife then this can be done with scissors and the extra slit closed with some sticky tape on the back!

Use your split pin to make a hole in the wheel and the background then attach the two together.

gently bend your wheel so that you can slide it into the slit.

Turn your felt pens into arrows and drop them on the target. Sometimes just a little bit of creativity can give a game a great boost, this game is totally functional without the craft option but even more memorable with it.

Includes 1 arrow head and one target on the first page & 4 extra arrow heads on the second page.
(Ruth and Boaz are a match for each other!)

Print out the pdf & gather the extra materials you’ll need – scissors, glue, sticky tape, an old towel and a pen per child.

For printing in Colour PDF – 2 pages
For printing with no Colour please use grayscale.

Cut the arrow feathers out and fold along the sides of the feathers.

Glue each feather to the back of the nest forming a line.

Before completing the circle add a piece of sticky tape to the ends of the middle shaft + add glue to just one side of the last feather.

Now the tricky bit. Wrap the tape round your pen end making sure to glue the final feather together as you go.

Put the target on an old towel (this will let the pen possibly pierce the paper and not ruin the nib) then launch / drop your arrow.

Today’s hero is Jonathan because he shows us the gift of Codes

Essential Teachers notes:
Kids love puzzles, they love secrets, and they love tricking people… the stories of Jonathan and his sister Michael tricking their father to safeguard David will resonate with a child’s sense of both mischief and justice. As this story doesn’t involve many people it’s written so that it can be acted out. While this story doesn’t directly refer to Michal and her idol switching trick do feel free to add it in if it helps. Please note : Jonathan is a character of much controversy and this lesson has been careful to avoid that.

Main Passage : 1 Samuel 20
Additional passages : 1 Samuel 18 & 19

—————————————-
Olleh! That’s hello backwards, did you recognise that? I wonder why someone may want to disguise what they are saying? Today’s hero disguised his message, if you listen carefully you’ll see why.

Israel had a king called Saul (chose someone to be Saul and place them on a seat with a crown)
Saul had made mistakes, everybody makes mistakes sometimes, but this was a big mistake and God was no longer helping him
God had chosen a new king, a new secret king, and his name was David ( choose someone to be David)
God was with David and David loved spending time with God. It made David special.
David didn’t have special parents, or come from a special place, he was ordinary until God chose him to be king.
but once that happened amazing things started happening to David… perhaps you know some of them?

David wasn’t king yet, David wouldn’t be king until Saul died, so David served Saul.
David was loyal & David was brave & David did everything Saul asked him to do.
And because God was with David everything he did was great, amazing, spectacular even.
Everybody loved David, they would cheer that Saul had won a thousand battles and David had won ten thousand battles.
They made David sound better than Saul… And Saul didn’t like that. (can our Saul look grumpy?)

Saul had kids. lots of kids, some were all grown up.
Saul’s son Jonathan was best friend’s was David. (find someone to be Jonathan)
Jonathan noticed that David wasn’t around as much as before so he asked David why
David told him that Saul was angry with him
that Saul may even want to kill him
Jonathan wasn’t sure so they decided to make a test… But they didn’t want to put David in danger

There was a big event coming up, everyone would be there, there would be a seat set for Jonathan and a seat for David, nobody would sit in their seats if they didn’t go. Jonathan would go and David would stay hidden. Jonathan would wait for Saul to notice and then say that he gave permission for David to miss the event so he could visit his family. It was a good excuse, Saul should not be angry. After the event Jonathan would return to the field to practice with his bow and arrows. If Saul was happy he would tell his servant ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you; bring them here’, but if Saul was angry he would tell his servant ‘Look, the arrows are beyond you’.

So David hid and waited
Jonathan went to the celebration and waited
On the second night Saul asked where David was and Jonathan told him the story he had prepared…..
And Saul went crazy….
really crazy,
he shouted and screamed at Jonathan,
he even threw his spear at Jonathan,
he screamed to his soldiers to ‘bring David to him, for he must die’
Jonathan left the event

He waited until the morning then took his servant to go shoot
Go collect the arrows he told his servant, and as the servant walked away he shouted ‘ Look, the arrows are beyond you’.
The servant didn’t know it was a secret message, all he knew was that when he returned with the arrows Jonathan sent him back to town alone. The servant didn’t see David come out from behind the rock, he didn’t see Jonathan crying or David crying, or where David went when he left.

Today’s hero is Jonathan because he shows us the gift of Codes
