Miriam’s simple acceptance of the situation, her fast feet and logical thinking are really what ties this story together. So often this story becomes all about baskets and babies and the comparative opulence of the palace over the slave-hood of the mother, but Miriam’s simple and straightforward actions are more easily grasped for a child.

To make this craft you will need a pair of scissors, sticky tape, a split pin, glue or a craft stick (optional) and the PDF printout. I’d recommend printing on thin card or backing onto card.

For printing in Colour PDF – 1 page
For printing everything with No colour PDF – 1 page

Cut out the three pieces – Miriam, the feet, and the handle. Leave the feet as a circle! If you have printed without colour it may be good to add a little colour at this point.

Fold the handle and glue the sides together. Alternatively cut to just the middle rectangle and glue onto a craft stick.

Where the circles indicate make holes through all layers of the handle, the feet wheel and Miriam.

Use either a split pin or a hair slide to join the pieces through the holes. Make sure the handle is the middle layer. Tape the handle to the back of Miriam so it doesn’t rotate.

Hold the handle and walk Miriam along the floor or table top, how fast can you make her run. Talk about how she may have been feeling running along, talk about what makes her a hero in this story (speed, loyalty, obedience, compassion, logic, fast thinking, bravery)

Shiphrah and Puah worksheet
This worksheet about Miriam is all about reflecting on the risks that the story involved, while it has some light relief with the simple maze at the bottom most is discussion based. It would be easy for some groups to draw a sad face on Miriam’s mother and give her a quick scribble of hair and shower her costume with vivid decorations, but challenge the older groups to really think about how both her heritage and identity as a slave in this land may have dictated her look.

To complete the worksheet you will need something to write and colour with and to turn your imaginations on!

This story of Miriam is all bout chasing the basket, keeping up with a moving object and not losing sight of it. That ties nicely into games and activities. If you are working through Moses as a series then I’ve included 2 of the games from the previous lesson on the Egyptian midwifes which would also work well and if enjoyed once could easily be repeated.

Moses baskets – This activity involves a large dish of water. Print out the pdf and fold every tab inwards to represent the basket. Place Moses inside the basket and drop it on the water all folded up. The basket should slowly open each petal to reveal the child inside. Turn this into a game by racing your baskets to see which opens the quickest, or using multiple baskets and having the children guess which one has Moses inside.

Racing along the river – Another water game this time involving making a small stream. Using a roll of metal kitchen foil create a river bed. Directly onto the foil draw using a new white board marker the basket for Moses – make sure it’s laid down thickly. Then, gently pour water over the picture and let the basket rise and float down the stream. You can give the children straws to make it into a race.

Chase it – Using a torch (or if the room is too bright then a low power laser pointer) have the children chase the light. Dependant on your group and room setup you can do this by occasionally covering the light then making it reappear or by having the light lead a child along a specific a pathway.

Where did it go? – if you are looking for a low prep solution try this version of hide the thimble type game. Hide a picture of Miriam, baby Moses or any of the characters you have met this far around the room, alternatively hide small containers to represent the basket or items that may have been on or in the water. Talk about how Miriam must have needed to be observant of where the basket went and good at spotting it from the river bank.

Obstacle course – If you have the space and equipment then go all out and do an obstacle course for the kids. this ties into Miriam running along the river bank nicely.

If you are working through Moses as a series then these two previous games for the Midwifes lessons also work well with Miriam.

or

Protection – This really simple card game is all about matching objects that protect us. Print then cut out the cards (click on picture for pdf) and gather items listed here. Have a child select a card then run to the pile of objects and find the right form of ‘protection’. Once found get the child to model it for the group. Talk abut how things protect us.
Items to gather :Umbrella, Scarf, Sunglasses, Inflatable, Blanket, Padlock, Torch, Fire extinguisher or toy fire engine, Apron, First aid kit, Toothbrush & Safety goggles.

or

Race the baby – This game requires a small pebble or object that can represent the baby. The idea of the game is for the loving family and friends to keep moving the baby before the midwife can find it. The midwife must call out a persons name and say the child’s name eg “ Aaron, Aaron, do you have the baby” Aaron then opens his hands palm side up to show if he does or doesn’t have the baby stone. The stone can be passed at any point excluding when the holders name is called. Link into the deception.

These is a moment of wonder in this story that this really simple little craft encompasses, it’s the moment when, as Miriam watches, the basket is opened and the baby Moses is revealed. This is one of those super quick crafts you could give the children to do themselves or it could easily be used as a game where you set off lots of baskets and get the kids to guess which one holds Moses.

To make this craft you will need a pair of scissors and the PDF printout. To play with it you need water that is flat – a standard dish will suffice – and the process is very much improved by making the water warm!

For printing in Colour PDF – 1 page
For printing in reduced colour PDF – 1 page
For printing everything with No colour PDF – 1 page

Simply cut out the basket and Moses, there are 2 to a page.

Place Moses inside the basket on the white side.

Fold every tab inwards, revealing the basket pattern

once all the tabs are folded in it should look like this.

Gently drop the basket into the water and watch, it may happen quite slowly.

Please note : the process will ruin the paper and drying out the paper doesn’t work!

Today’s hero is Miriam because she shows us the gift of chasing

Essential Teachers notes:
Miriam is a lovely character to explore at this young age and a thread that continues through the Exodus story-line. The stories in the bible about youth are always welcome and this one in particular where it’s not only a child, but such a young one and a girl, can be really inspiring for youngsters to hear. The age of around 5 is not explicit in the text but generally agreed upon by extrapolation from other passages. If you have a very young group that is easily distressed you may want to rephrase the paragraph about the Pharaoh killing the baby boys.

Main Passage : Exodus 2
—————————————-
Often the bible hero’s we talk about are old, they do brave and daring things, but today’s hero is just 5 years old. Her name is Miriam and her job was to play a game.

Miriam and her mummy loved to play by the river, mummy would gather up the long reeds or wash some clothes while Miriam splashed around. The game would begin when her mummy dropped something in the water and called out chase! Miriam would run along the bank until her legs hurt trying to see where the dropped item went. Miriam was good at chasing things.

Suddenly, one day, Miriam couldn’t go to the water anymore, she had to stay at home with her big brother Aaron, her mummy went alone. Miriam missed the water. The pharaoh had decided that there were too many Israelites like Miriam and her family. He decided the best way to cut down the numbers was to kill all the new baby boys. He’s tried to get the midwifes to help him but that failed, so he ordered that every new Israelite boy should be thrown in the middle of the deep river and left to drown in the waters. The river became a place mothers would cry for their lost sons. Miriam’s mummy was protecting her.

Soon mummy stopped going to the river too, because her mummy was going to have a baby. When the baby was born her mummy kept it hidden. “is it a sister for me to play with” Miriam would ask and her mummy would shake her head sadly then make Miriam promise not to tell anyone. For 3 months the baby was hidden in the house while Miriam’s mummy tried to decide what to do.

One afternoon Miriam’s was told her they were going to the river. She was so excited. Her mummy got out a big basket that was covered in sticky black tar and placed the baby inside. When they got to the river, the basket was gently placed in the water and they watched as it started to drift away. Miriam didn’t wait for her mum to say chase she just went running.

Along the river bank she ran and ran, the sun was hot and the mud hard below her feet. She didn’t notice how far she had run, she didn’t notice the palace guard, she just kept her eyes on the basket. It rose and fell with the ripples of the water, moving fast then slow and bumping off any obstacle it met.

Just as Miriam thought she could run no more the basket floated straight into a big bank of tall reeds and disappeared. When Miriam got to the reeds she started searching. Could hear a baby was crying over there, or there? She pushed through the more and more reeds, she was so busy looking she didn’t hear the other people. There it was, and it was open and a Egyptian lady was holding her brother.

Miriam stopped and started at the group of ladies. The one in the middle wore makeup and a huge gold neck collar, she must be really important thought Miriam. Eventually one of them turned and noticed standing there.

“Did you see the basket in the river” the lady asked, Miriam nodded, “it’s got a baby inside” the lady said as if Miriam didn’t know that already.
“It must be one of the Israelite babies!” another lady said, “shall we keep it?”
“What a wonderful idea, yes lets” said the important lady, “but we will need someone to look after it.
And it was then Miriam realised how clever her mummy was. It a big loud voice she said “Shall I go and get one of the Israelite women for you?”

Her brother was safe and her mummy would see her son again. The Egyptian lady, who had been down by the river taking a cool bath was the Pharaoh’s daughter – She names the little baby Moses and he grew up in the palace. The tiny baby Moses would became a very important man when he was older.

Today’s hero is Miriam because she shows us the gift of chasing
