Zipphorah meets Moses as a wanderer, a runaway, and yet as a man who acts honourably and helps her and her sisters. These games play with the key elements of the story, the runaway, the shepherd life and the well full of water. There is also a make/play post for this lesson (will add link when it arrives)

Wet sheep – If you are blessed with an outdoor area and a warm day this story is a perfect opportunity for water games. Grab a selection of small tables and call them sheep, have the children try and throw each sheep some water. According to age you could add in a scoring system according to which sheep is hit. For those stuck indoors this game works just as well with blue beanbags!

Runaway – Moses had to escape Egypt, and a simple game of tag, or it, or chase would work well as an introduction for this narrative. End the game by sitting for a drink of water to put the kids in Moses shoes.

Which Sister – Print off this game from the Make/Play post. If you played ‘guess who’ as a child then you’ll know exactly how to play.

Pull it up – This is a test of strength using a bucket, rope and pully system. Unless you are blessed with a beam or high wall fixing use a turned up table or even just a chair to throw the rope over. Have the participant lay on the floor and try to pull up the bucket. If they succeed put something in the bucket to simulate water. Talk about how much work raising water for an entire flock would have been.

Sheep separation – (a JWL favourite sheep game) This is a noisy and silly game for a group. Choose 2 herdsmen, and assign them each a colour. Using chairs, or some sort of barriers, make sheep pens. Tell all the other children they must pretend to be sheep, on all fours. If someone comes and stands near them they must turn away from the person. when all the children are on all fours mark their backs with a coloured dot. The herdsmen then need to herd the sheep into the right pen.

I couldn’t resist adding this little ‘guess who’ inspired game to this lesson on Zipporah and her seven sisters. It’s a simple print and go game and is great for getting to know the characters.

The PDF has 3 pages, print them all out. All you’ll need is some scissors to make up your game, but if you are handy with a craft knife that will make it easier.

For printing in colour (or greyscale) PDF – 1 page

If you are not blessed with a colour printer then you may want to add a little highlighting of colour to the characters to make them stand out – make sure you do this identically to both boards and the cards.

Then go ahead and cut out all those beautiful little cards.

We need to cut along only the dotted lines of the game board. A craft knife and safety rule is the obvious choice but lightly folding will also allow you to make an opening slit.

Fold all those little flaps upright and set up your game.

Shuffle the character cards and lay them face down on the table. Each player chooses one card and places it on their dark box face down (they can check it anytime, if they need). Take it in turns to ask yes/no questions – is it a man, are they wearing a belt, do they have a stick etc. Until the character is revealed.

This worksheet about Zipphorah and Moses is all about reflecting on truth. The truth of how Moses reached Zipphorah is not a cute story, and Zipphorah was my no means a simple person to meet with 6 sisters in tow – talk about a female dominated household. This worksheet is a mixture of puzzles and pondering with most activities having two elements. The worksheet can be done either independently or in a small group setting.

To complete the worksheet you will need something to write with and to turn your imaginations on!

Today’s heroes are Zipporah and Moses because they shows us the gift of history
Essential Teachers notes:
Often this story of Zipporah can feel unnecessary with such a long narrative, but it’s the story of Moses downfall and redemption, it’s the humanisation of a man whose face will one day shine from his direct contact with the divine. Without this story Moses can be seen as a man who just happened to be immensely blessed at every turn. This story would also work well as a script with a narrator and 4+ actors.

Main Passage : Exodus 2
—————————————-
Early in the morning, before the sun was up Zipporah and her sisters would call ‘Seh, Seh’ and the sheep would come running to them. Once the count was done they followed the trail away from home. No matter which way they went they had to find a well for the sheep to have a drink. Sheep need water.

One day when Zipporah got near the well she saw it surrounded by a sea of sheep and two men sat on the ground. These were lazy shepherds. Once they had stopped for water they would sit as the day got hotter and their sheep blocked the well. There wasn’t another well nearby. She would have to wait for them to move or go and argue for them to move.

Carrying a small tired lamb, she went down towards the well. Once near she realised there was a third man, a strange man she’d never seen before. He wasn’t sitting with the shepherds, perhaps he could help. He saw Zipphorah coming, raised himself up and walked over the the other shepherds.

“Perhaps it’s time you moved your sheep on to make way for others?” the strange man said in a loud clear voice.
“Why should we?” came the rough reply, “The silly little girls can wait”
“Oh, I see, you are bigger and stronger, they can not make you move on” said the strange man
“Yes indeed” the shepherds laughed
“I understand” the man replied. “I am a strong Egyptian man, I grew up in a palace, servants and slaves brought me everything I commanded.”
Zipporah could see the men smiling, they liked this idea.
“In Egypt there were lots of slaves, we used them for everything, all the dirty work, all the heavy lifting. They weren’t like us, they were foreigners in our land. When I was a babe there were so many of these foreigners they killed off all the males boys for a few years, threw them in the river. Sometimes you need to control the herd.”
Zipphorah was shocked but the men were still smiling.
“Took me a long time to learn that history lesson, they hid it from me, do you know why?”
“No, why?” the men eagerly replied
“Because that’s where they found me, in a basket, in the water, that’s what my name means, to be pulled from water – Moses”
Zipphorah gasped.
“Oh yes,” said Moses, “yes, I may have been brought up in a palace but I was born a slave. When I learned the truth I went to find my real family, I went into the part of the city where they lived. I looked at the teams of men and the women cleaning at the waters edge. Were these the faces of my brothers and sisters, my mother and father? There, I saw a slave master beating one of his men, a weak man, a small man, beating him for no reason, beating him because nobody would stop him. For the first time I got truly angry, so very angry. I followed that big slave master, that terrible man, I followed him and then….”
Moses hung his head and in a low whisper he breathed “then I killed him”
The two men weren’t smiling anymore.
“You may be bigger and stronger than these girls but perhaps now you think it’s time you moved your sheep on?”

The two men jumped up quickly, they kept looking back at Moses trying to decide if he was being truthful. Moses walked over to the well and silently threw down the bucket. By the time Zipporah’s sisters arrived Moses had filled the ditch with water for the sheep.
“Is, is it true?” Zipporah asked Moses, “Did you really kill a man?”
“yes, sadly, yes” said Moses shamefully “It was wrong, so very wrong, and after I ran away because I was afraid I would lose my own life. I should have helped my people, I could have helped my people and I didn’t.”

When Zipporah arrived home early her father, Jethro, sent her back to get Moses. They invited him to eat to say thank you for his help. Jethro understood Moses, he understood the anger and the reasons for the wrong and invited him to stay. Moses became a shepherd, and after some time Zipporah and Moses were married. But Moses didn’t forget his people and his old city.

Today’s heroes are Zipporah and Moses because they shows us the gift of history

Lots of biblical passages involve truly supernatural acts of wonder, but this story of Zipphorah and Moses is much more down to earth, it’s simplicity makes reenactment a great tool and so this shadow puppet theatre is ideal. This is an ideal small group or pairs activity.

The PDF’s prove you with a stage printout and a set of black characters that should be printed onto acetate (this will save hours of cutting), added to that you’ll need some sticks or a second sheet of acetate, scissors, a bright torch, a cardboard tube, some sticky tack and something to support the stage with (a box, some wooden blocks etc).

For printing in stage in colour PDF – 1 page
For printing in stage with no colour PDF – 1 page
For printing black characters PDF – 1 page

Start by roughly cutting out the characters, it really doesn’t have to be exact.

Take your second acetate sheet and cut a strip for each character. The strips will attach to the characters upwards out of their heads.

Stationary objects can be placed on the floor by folding the spare acetate at the base or attaching to acetate folded in half.

Add your stage to the supports using sticky tack – I’ve used wooden building blocks here but you could use anything you a have on hand or make supports using card.

Position your light on the flat surface at one end of the cardboard tube. Adjust the circle of light to fill the back of the stage area.

Take the props and start placing them between the light and the stage. It may take a little time to remember how distance makes things change size and focus.

On with the show.

Zipporah meets Moses at an interesting point in his life, she sees him through his act of chivalry, and yet the man she meets is broken, on the run. This act of chivalry is what is depicted in this craft, it’s a really simple foldable that helps the kids focus on the story and retell it to others.

To make this craft you will need a pair of scissors, some colouring materials, a craft knife and the PDF printout. I’d recommend pre-cutting the line and printing the craft in partial or no colour (the colour version is available for a display model or as a story prop)

For printing in Colour PDF – 1 page
For printing in partial colour PDF – 1 page
For printing everything with No colour PDF – 1 page

Colour in your masterpiece first, the partially coloured template already has the background done for you. Once you are done cut out the rectangle.

The only tricky bit is cutting the wavy line around Zipporah – this is fine to do on the day for a small group but preparing it before is the best policy.

Once cut fold the line it intersects so the white sides of the paper touch.

Next take the other end and fold those mean shepherds around the back using the dotted line – again the white sides of the paper touch.

Onto the final fold, this one needs to be folded the opposite way, so the coloured sides of the paper touch and Zipporah blocks the sheep drinking water.

Tell the story by moving between the confrontation and the male shepherds leaving.
