Moses and the burning bush is a moving alive image and and such these little viewers make the bush seem to come to life like a hologram. I’ve been careful not to use a video file so you can download the .gif file onto any device and do the activity without internet access. It works best on a black background which is the default for some image viewers and browsers.

To make this craft you will need a pair of scissors, some sticky tape, a phone or tablet, the PDF printout and either acetate or clear plastic packaging. I’d recommend the acetate route and printing directly onto it.

Template PDF – 1 page, 2 viewers per page.
Link for animation Animated Gif File

Cut the shape out of acetate or trace it onto packaging plastic using a permanent marker and ruler then cut it out.

Fold along the straight lines to form a four sided pyramid without a point.

Using sticky tape attach the two edges together.

Open the animation file on a tablet or phone. Viewing straight from the web on chrome usually gives a black background, some image viewers will also let you set the unused space colour.

Place the viewer in the very middle of the image with each side facing a flame. The image will be view-able from all sides – useful if you are demonstrating with a group.

Move your eyes level with the screen and see the ‘hologram’ fire effect
Note: I’ve tried to zoom in here in low light to give you the biggest preview possible.

Moses story centres around that pivotal moment when he saw the flames surrounding the bush. Some crafts we just stumble across and that’s very much how this one came around, it’s simple enough to do with the younger children but older ones can add to this base by adding their own tiny flames to the branches.

As well as the printout,to make this craft you will need a pair of scissors, something to write with, some sticky tape, and some green yellow or brown wrapping ribbon. (You may also need colouring pens if you are printing without colour)

For printing in full colour PDF – 1 page
For printing in outline only PDF – 1 page

Cut off the photo and the instructions, you don’t need to do this but it helps.

Fill in the speach bubble – this is a good chance to see how the kids have grasped the story. If you have a large group on non-writers you may want to prepare some sticky labels to put here.

Cut your wrapping ribbon into lengths of about 15 cm.

Use sticky tape to attach one end of the ribbons onto the tree stump, do this individually or in pairs or they will likely slide out.

Keep attaching branches until you have between 5 and 8.

Now curl your ribbon by running it along the edge or a pair of scissors or ruler. You may need to do a bit of arranging to make your bush look full.

Older children can then stick small flames onto the branches, use red and orange paper and glue dots for the best effect.

Moses worksheet
This worksheet about Moses looks at the big story so far, it looks at how God equipps us through life for where he wants us to be and what he wants us to do. As a child this is a really comforting thought -ie we are not expected to topple goliaths because we are the same age as David was. It also discusses the fears moese had when God revealed why his life had taken the routes it had, it’s a sheet that needs discussion and so get your kids to work in small groups. The light fun at the end is a spot the sheep game.

To complete the worksheet you will need something to write with and to turn your thinking caps on!

Moses life is a great saga and this moment is the moment where the past present and future meet. Very few people experience a burning bush or Damascus road moment. However clear the message Moses isn’t a willing participant and some of these games take inspiration from that, others are more concrete in their link to the passage.

Let it not burn – The aim of this game is to build flames to engulf the shrub. In preparation you’ll need to cut enough flames for the challenge to be completed out of paper, tissue or crepe paper would also work well. If you are blessed to have a hardy real plant use it, if not then a pile of twigs or a photograph of a bush would work. Have your group, or groups race against the clock to cover the shrub with flames. For older groups make it a relay race.

Fire dance – Give each child a streamer or short ribbon (fire colours are great if possible). Pop some instrumental music on and have them dance swirling their props like flames. once they get the hang of it start to control the fire by giving instructions – the flames are little and low, getting bigger, getting smaller, tall and thin etc. You could add the command ‘a bucket of water’ to have the kids collapse on the floor as the flames go out.

You know already? – Do you start your session with a game? If so why not try a riddle instead, the classic “If I drink, I die. If i eat, I am fine. What am I?” (answer fire) or the slightly easier “which man can never enjoy a blazing fire” (answer – snowman). Talk about how God had already equipped Moses with the knowledge he needed even if Moses doubted.

Anywhere but… – Moses wasn’t exactly thrilled with the idea or returning to Egypt. This game plays on that idea. Split the kids into teams and challenge them to come up with the best ending to the sentences below… or make up your own.

I love to eat anywhere but….
I want to go anywhere but…
Wearing goggles is great anywhere but…
I want to paint anywhere but…
I’d help clean anywhere but…
I enjoy climbing anywhere but…
I’d dance with you anywhere but…
Hear me shout anywhere but…

Obstacle course – Yet again this story lends itself to an obstacle course, traverse the river, cross the desert, round up the sheep and find the burning bush.

This Moses and the burning bush craft is simple enough for younger kids if pre-cut and open ended enough to allow older children to experiment with colour placing techniques. The burning bush did not burn and yet it was engulfed in fire, it is the central symbol of this story. I’ve gone to great lengths to make sure this craft needs no craft knife or windows cut into the paper, it works perfectly well on printer paper or thin card and is available to print in colour, partial colour (Moses left blank) or outline.

To make this craft you will need a pair of scissors, some sticky tape, and something to add colour with – stamps, pens, crayons, paint, tissue paper, the possibilities are vast.

For printing in full colour PDF – 1 page
For printing in partial colour (recommended) PDF – 1 page
For printing in outline only PDF – 1 page

Cut out the long rectangle piece.

The important area is the space indicated by the arrows – this needs to be be filled with colour, if your kids with to fill more that’s ok too.

I chose paint stampers but how you add colour is totally up to you, if you’ve had some oil crayons rolling around, some stamp pads, candy wrappers – the only word of warning is not to have too much sticking up to catch on edges.

Get decorating – the longer your decorations the more you can make the flames ‘flicker’ as you pull the paper along. If you leave at least one side of the indicated box clear you can make the ‘no-fire’ setup.

While your creation is drying (if needed) cut out the second part. The cutting doesn’t need to be exact but generally cutting just to one side of the line (cutting off the line) is better.

If you have young children this cutting is a step you’ll almost certainly have to prep in advance. Then it is a simple fold along the lines setup.

Both sides fold around to the back so the illustrations show.

Once folded the layers will overlap slightly. choose which looks better on the top.

Though not necessary a small piece of tape to secure the pieces in place helps at this point.

Now carefully slide your decorated piece inside.

Moses came close… God spoke!

Today’s hero is Moses because he shows us the gift of a plan
Essential Teachers notes:
The story of Moses encounter with the burning bush is iconic and as such can suffer from re-tellers errors. Before teaching this story it’s really important to go back and read exodus 3 and 4. This is a story where the board is set and everything prepared, it’s a story of ignition in more ways than one, it’s a story of God’s timing not our own, and a story of a master plan greater than the Hebrews, or even Moses, imagined.

Main Passage : Exodus 3-4
—————————————-

Moses had been wandering around with the sheep, not following any real path. He was on the edge of the mountain of God when he’d seen the bush. It had confused him. How could the bush be on fire but not burning. Then he had heard a voice, a voice so familiar and yet he didn’t know it at all.

“Moses Moses” came the voice and as Moses moved closer again it came “take off your shoes, this is holy ground!”
God introduced himself then, the God that Moses had learnt of, the God of Abraham, of Isaac and Jacob, the God of his people. Moses knew people had started to whisper, started to doubt, started to wonder why their God left them as slaves. And here he was, not talking to one of them but to Moses, the runaway, Moses the failed Egyptian and the failed Hebrew too. And then God said the words every Hebrew had longed to hear, the words they thought may never come, He said he saw how they suffered, he said a plan was coming, he said the time had come for then to be free. And not just free, more than free, a people with a land and a beautiful land flowing with milk and honey and every good thing. And his big plan was… Moses.

“No way, wrong guy, no no no” said Moses. “the Hebrews won’t believe me, I mean I’m not really one of them, perhaps I was born that way but I’m 80, I’ve never lived as they do, nope, sorry God but I’m the wrong one”
“This is what to say to the Hebrews” replied God, and he gave Moses a script, “this is what to say to the Pharaoh too…” he added and then “I should warn you, it’s going to be tough, but I’m going to convince them through you, and when you leave the Egyptians will shower you with gifts for your journey”

“But they won’t believe me”, shouted Moses, “why should they even listen”
“They will listen” replied God “And, if they doubt I’ll give you amazing signs to show them, miracles from heaven, I’ll turn your stick into a snake, go on, test it out” Moses threw his stick on the floor and ran back as it became a snake, “grab it’s tail” came God’s voice and as soon as Moses touched the snake it became a stick again. God gave Moses 2 more signs but still it was not enough for him

“Lord, please, I’m not good at speaking, I’m slow and I stutter and I mumble and…”
God was getting frustrated, Could Moses really think a little stutter would stop God’s plan, God who had created Moses, created mouths, formed words long before anyone could speak. “Please lord, please, send someone else” Moses begged. God looked at the shaking man before the fiery bush. He was foolish or very brave, arguing with God, but God took pity. I’ll send your big brother, Aaron, to meet you, he can walk this path with you so you are not alone. And then the fire was gone and the bush seemed just a tangle of branches and leaves.

God sat up in heaven and sighed at Moses. Couldn’t he see the way He had prepared him? God had been putting the different pieces together for years. He had saved Moses from the river. God had given him a safe house to grow up in and knowledge of not only the Egyptians but the Pharaoh. Moses knew the way they cared, the way they fought, the way they judged things to be true. God had sadly known the way Moses real family was treated would eventually break him. He had kept him safe from the Pharaoh when Moses did things wrong, kept him safe as he ran away and had lead him to Jethro and his daughters home. He watched over Moses for years, waiting for the time that it was safe to send him back, waiting for the time the plan could start and God’s people could be free.

A few days later Moses left the sheep with his father in law Jethro, he packed up a donkey with a tent and supplies for the journey. Then Moses, his son, and Zipphorah, his wife headed back towards Egypt.

Today’s hero is Moses because he shows us the gift of a plan
