The idea of hiding things inside containers and the light shining through is a beautiful visual this craft plays on. It’s partly a craft and partly a memory game. If you have a very young group, make the whole thing in advance and just search inside. An older group can play a speed game where someone calls out a symbol, and they race to find it in their containers.

To make this craft, you will need the 1-page template printout, scissors, some paper glue and a torch.

Cut out the two big rectangles along the solid lines.

Glue the rectangle with the containers over the top of the other rectangle.
(Add glue over the entire surface!)

Divide into six pieces along the dotted lines.

Your craft is almost complete, now we require the torch!

Place your container over a torch and switch it on.

The light passes through the paper, revealing the hidden object within.

Psalm 22 starts with the cry that one day Jesus will echo on the cross, but the end of the psalm comes with joy as ‘all the families’ recognise God and join together to worship him.

This craft Captures the feeling of Verse 27 as it shows the people gathered. It’s made deliberately plain, so the kids can go wild decorating it themselves.

To make this craft, you will need the 1-page template printout, scissors, and some paper glue.

Cut out all the parts.

Zigzag fold the people using the dotted lines and where the bodies join. Start by folding the glue tabs behind the people.

Add glue and attach the people to the background where shown.

Bring scripture to your celebration table, with these bright crackers. They are remarkably easy to make. The four designs all feature a bible verse, some JWL characters and a joke on the reverse. There are 2 sizes to print and a version without colour you could colour yourself or print onto coloured paper.

To make this craft, you will need just 1-page of the template printout, glue, string, and scissors.
I find it helpful to use something to score the lines — my preferred tools are a ruler and push pin.

Cut out the shape.

Fold along the middle of the diamonds and snip out the resulting triangles.

Lay those scissors aside, it’s time to start folding!

If you are adding “bang” inserts, then add those now!

Scoring the lines really does help give a crisp look, though it’s not necessary. I use a ruler and a push pin because it’s easy to hold.

Add glue to the three tabs and glue together your 5 sided tube.

Take roughly 25 cm / 10in of twine and pass it around the gather point a few times until it’s short enough to tie in a double knot.

If you are going to pull your crackers slide your surprise items inside before tying the second end.

This is a comparison of the two sizes, both are big enough to hold a surprise.

It can be easy to focus on the idea of Jeremiah’s age or the physical touch of God, but this craft refocuses on the purpose of Jeremiah’s call. This papercraft physically puts God’s words into Jeremiah’s mouth.

Jeremiah papercraft supplies

To make this craft, you will need the 1-page template printout, a craft knife, glue, and scissors.

Jeremiah papercraft craft knife

Cut along the slit line in the background and remove the white rectangle from the mouth with a craft knife. Then add colour if required.

Jeremiah papercraft cut

Cut out all the pieces.

Jeremiah papercraft slider fold

Fold the small white rectangle along the dotted lines.

Jeremiah papercraft insert slider

Push the folded shape through the long slit, so the words are visible, and it freely slides along the line.

Jeremiah papercraft insert text

Thread the words into the mouth until they are not visible.

Jeremiah papercraft attach hand

Add a small drop of glue onto the slider and attach the hand to the slider mechanism.

Jeremiah papercraft starting position

Slide the hand all the way towards Jeremiah to find the starting position.

Jeremiah papercraft moving the hand

How amazing it must have sounded for God to speak so audibly to one so unprepared, to feel the hand of God on your face. It’s often quoted verse about youth comes is shown in the proper context, that being the commissioning of this voice for God, by God, and to serve the people of God.

This retold version of the Bible passage is supplied for inspiration, feel free to omit or embellish to give it your personal voice.

Main passage: Jeremiah 1:4-10

Bible retelling of Jeremiah 1

Jeremiah was still young, still growing, all arms and legs, with little experience of the world. His father had not yet talked of a wife, and no rabbi would have let him speak in the synagogue. I guess he was a teenager when he heard the Lord quite clearly; God’s voice both unfamiliar and yet instantly known:

“I chose you,” the voice came, and Jeremiah’s world stopped; life would never be the same. He was chosen. “I set you apart, long before you were born,” came the voice, “before your bones formed in your mother’s body, I had appointed you as my prophet!”

Jeremiah stood up and shook his head, a prophet? And now? Now, when the faith of the people was so weak? Now, when the old ways of following the Israelite God were so ignored? Who would want that call? It was not a job one would volunteer for. The people would not welcome a prophet from God happily.

Jeremiah opened his mouth and roared, “Whoa! No!” He stumbled with words. How could he refuse God? What could he say? He was not used to speaking with important people, let alone the God of the whole universe! “Oh no, Lord God! Look, I don’t know how to speak. I am only a youth,” he stuttered.

But God roared back to him, his voice filling Jeremiah’s ears and vibrating all the air around him.
“Do not say, ‘I am only a youth,’ Jeremiah. You will be my messenger, going to everyone I send you to and speaking whatever I tell you. Do not be afraid of anyone, for I will be with you to rescue you.”

Then a hand appeared before him, a finger stretched towards his face, and Jeremiah was in such shock he stood frozen to the spot. The finger brushed up against his lips, and the voice of God whispered gently to him;
“I have now filled your mouth with my words. I have placed you over nations and kingdoms with the authority to uproot and tear down, to destroy and demolish, to build and plant.”

Jeremiah stood for a long time in the room after the voice had disappeared. Why did God choose a teenager and not a man with a position? He stood thinking about where God might send him, who he might be afraid of, and how God would rescue him. He stood thinking about what might be torn down and what might be built. What would God show him as a prophet?

Layered image crafts are simple and yet lovely keepsake crafts. This one for Young Jesus shows him in the temple talking to the crowd. This moment is really significant because here Jesus is showing us that while he is still almost 2 decades away from his main ministry time, his earthly relationship with God as his father is not something that just develops overnight.

Young Jesus at the temple layered craft materials

To make this craft, you will need the 1-page template printout and scissors. You may want to use spacers (foam or cardboard), and a hole punch.

Young Jesus at the temple layered craft punch hole

Colour if required, then onto cutting. Use a hole punch to start the kids cutting the space in the middle of the frame.

Young Jesus at the temple layered craft cut pieces

This craft will look as good as your cutting skills but is forgiving if you skirt around small details like the indents on the pillars.

Young Jesus at the temple layered craft attach spacers

Add foam spacers (or cardboard pieces) to the back of the large step piece first and position.

Young Jesus at the temple layered craft begin construction

Next add the small step, this goes at the base, not in the middle.

Young Jesus at the temple layered craft add character

Add a spacer to the back of Jesus and put him in the middle of the picture. This will ‘squash’ the top step.

Next, add the pillars, we do these last so we can move around the Jesus figure more easily.

Young Jesus at the temple layered craft outer frame

Lastly, add spacers to the frame, then position.
(I found it better not to add any spacers to the crowd pieces.)

Young Jesus at the temple layered craft complete

The scene is complete.
