I have some very little ones in my group and so I’m trying to put more younger crafts on for them. this one is very simple and reusable. I bought a cheap wooden block set from what the locals call a ‘Chinese’ shop and using sticky tack I made a maze for the kids to solve. They can use a finger to trace the route or a toy person, or a block with a picture attached with glue. Once solved you can let the children destroy it and make a picture of the house that Peter was looking for out of the blocks.

The pop-up house is a simple craft and can be turned into a little storytelling stage. The basic concept is straightforward and I would recommend getting teens to make their own design. younger children will probably be better with a template.

You can download the PDF of my design which has an extra page with just the mechanism outline by clicking on this sentence.

You will need at least 2 sheets of paper, one for the mechanism and one for the inside of the house. you’ll also need a craft knife, a ruler and some glue.
Start by doing the cutting, you may want to do this before the session. Cut the lines along the sides of the middle house. Also cut out the window.
Let the children decorate their houses if they want to and then start folding. fold along the top and bottom of your cut lines first – that’s the back of the roof and the floor of the middle house. Then fold the rest of the floor and the front of the roof.

Now take your second sheet and fold it along the floor (horizon). Apply glue to the outside piece of the card. Close the inside piece, and push it into the middle of the card fold. Press the car closed and smooth over.

Or you could make your own!

Technical bit first. you need to spit up the working area into 6 equal parts. the middle line being the main fold if you want to make it into a card.
Then you want to place your pop up house. leave the two 6th’s empty, use the the next two as the building and the next one as a roof
once you’ve drawn out the basic cut and fold lines you can start decorating. or just leave it blank – It doesn’t take a great artist, but a few windows and perhaps a door or two, and even a pathway would help the kids get the concept. Photocopy or print your image so it’s flat and then cut along the sides of the house and roof if applicable. Also cut out any windows on the pop-up house.

The original pattern took it’s artwork from Dider at Mylittlehouse, he provides the images for flannel-graphs and they can be found HERE. NB: the roof looks pretty but it sticks out of the card šŸ™

————
The first church started, but, when something is new it also scares people. The disciples taught people about Jesus and some people didn’t like it, especially the religious leaders who thought they knew all about God, and this Jesus didn’t sound like the God they knew.

So the church was persecuted, the leaders were arrested, they were put in prison, and sadly some of them died because they refused to say that the church’s story wasn’t true. This story happens at a very sad time. One of Jesus’ special 12 followers had just died. Everyone was very sad and scared, because now another one of Jesus’ followers, Peter, was in the same prison.

Peter was chained between two guards, he was praying to God, and he knew that in the city there was a house full of people praying to God too. It was very late and Peter slowly fell asleep. Suddenly there was someone in the prison, light shone brightly and the stranger said ā€œget upā€. Peter looked at his wrists to see the chains had fallen off. Peter thought he was dreaming, this must be an angel he thought. ā€œGrab your clothes and shoes and follow meā€ said the angel.

Peter walked behind the angel, he walked past one guard and then another one, when he reached a door or a gate it opened without anyone touching it. They left the prison and walked into the city streets. Suddenly the angel was gone. Peter looked around him at the city, he wasn’t asleep, this had been real. He needed to find the house of believers and tell them the amazing story.

In the house people were getting tired. Rhoda has the job of keeping everyone awake, she fetched drinks and welcomed new people as they arrived, found places for people to put their shoes and more and more cushions to sit on. She was really, really tired, but she loved Peter, he was their leader, and she was scared what would happen if Peter was killed. The door was being knocked on again, whoever this was they were turning up very late, it was gone midnight.

She ran down to the door. She had to be careful, it could be someone had found them and come to arrest her and her friends. ā€œWho is itā€ she called softly…. ā€œIt’s Peterā€ came the reply. Peter was in prison, perhaps this was a trap. ā€œCould you say that again please?ā€ she called. ā€œRhoda, it’s me Peter, let me inā€ came the reply, in a voice that she knew so well. ā€œPeter!ā€ she squeaked excitedly.

Rhoda ran upstairs, bursting into the room of prayers. ā€œhe’s here, he’s here, Peterā€ she half shouted breathlessly. ā€œstop being silly Rhodaā€ said a voice. Rhoda felt hurt, this was the news they had all wanted, the thing they had been praying for, didn’t they believe prayer worked. ā€œHe’s hereā€ she said quietly ā€œhe called my name and asked to be let in, I’d know his voice.ā€

ā€œRhodaā€ said a calm voice next to her, ā€œif he was here why didn’t you open the door?ā€ Rhoda went red, then redder, and then ran from the room. She has been so excited she had forgotten to open the door. Behind her she heard the footsteps of other people, everyone was heading down to the door. Peter did laugh at her for forgetting to open the door, but Rhoda didn’t mind, their prayers had been answered.

This passage is all about Rhoda, probably a young girl just doing her everyday stuff, but bursting with excitement at what she finds. The story also encompasses Peter’s escape, so there is a lot of scope to tie into journeys, being led, finding, dreams, and angels!

Who’s at the Door – simple listening game involving placing one child one side of a barrier and another child calls out ‘let me in’, the first child has to guess who is calling. as children get older they disguise their voice and it gets harder.

In Prison – kind of a variation of musical statues where when the music stops you need you wait to be released from the prison by the ‘angels’. Via Scripture union

What’s The Time Mr Wolf – the idea of sneaking around goes well with the story, also turning your back to the people who are trying to get in. (games children are familiar with also help with new teachers)

Untangle escape – take a play hoop, large enough to pass over each person and place on the floor between two standard plastic chairs. tie the two ends of a long rope or ribbon to the chairs placed beside the hoop and let the excess rope fall in a pile inside the hoop. get every participant to grab the rope using only one hand. The leader then picks up the hoop, say’s the hoop is Peter trying to escape from prison, but the prison wasn’t next to the house.pull the two chairs apart forcing the people to line up in a random order. then place the hoop under the first chair. pass the hoop along the rope, over each participant until it reaches the house at the other end.

Memory Trays – Rhoda forgot to open the door, this classic game of identifying the missing object of the tray ties into the story in an obvious way and is simple for those teachers with limited room.
