I will be using the tree template printout, but you can draw your own if you would rather. Mine can be found by clicking on the image. be prepared to put in some time with the craft knife as it can be a slow job to cut out all the trees for a large group.

You will need scissors, scalpel (optional), thick card, pencil, craft glue or double sided tape, printout, printout or wooden shape of Zacchaeus, and green tissue paper.

Prepare the template first first. print onto thick paper, and transfer the pattern onto card either with tracing paper or by cutting it out and tracing round. this template will make all the trees so make sure you are happy with it, be careful with the slots down the tree trunk.Arrange your shape onto your card so as to get the maximum tree shapes per side. you need two tree templates per child, or three if you wish to get fancy!
Each tree only needs to have one slot, not two, so they can slide together, just remember to count so you don’t end up with odd tree shapes that don’t fit. if you want to do three pieces to a tree ( if you are using floppy card) then cut the slots a little longer on the first two pieces and cut both slots a little shorter for the middle piece. I was keen not to use glue so that i would have instantly dry trees, so i covered my outer branches, both sides, with thin strips of double sided tape. this really works well but craft glue is fine too.
Now we need to prepare the leaves. Fold the tissue paper into multiple layers, cut off a strip and cut out a leaf shape about 2cm long, you’ll instantly have lots. Cutting the leaf on the fold makes it harder to separate and so I would not recommend doing so this time. I also mixed two shades of green and a sheet of yellow to give my leaves some character.
Now for the fun bit…. peel off the tape back or apply the glue and get sticking. finish one side before the other and let the leaves overlap the edges…liberally. your tree will come to life very quickly. The finished tree just needs a Zacchaeus, i managed to get some wooden cutouts for this activity which we coloured with felt tip pens, but a printout on thin card would suffice

This could be used as a discussion starter, a game, a craft or a worksheet. Jesus helped Zacchaeus to see the word differently, and that’s what this activity is all about. It’s diversity of uses means I could have placed it in many sections but as there is no worksheet I’ve placed it here in ‘Direct’.

You will need:

transparent red plastic
glasses pattern
thin ribbon, elastic or string
printout of tree
craft glue
double sided tape or a stapler.

Red transparent plastic is not difficult to source, but may take a specialised trip. I found the best thing to use can be found in stationary shops as protective covers for binding documents, they are reasonably priced and sturdy for cutting. Alternativly, try sheets or a roll used for wrapping food goods, wrapping for presents, and individual chocolate wrappers. The thing to be mindful of is that they are transparent and not Translucent or you won’t be able to see through the glasses.

This is a colour exclusion exercise. Jesus didn’t make the world round Zacchaeus change, nor did he heal him of his bad vision, rather he made him see that different things matter. The glasses will dull all red objects and make green objects stand out more. The image of the tree is covered in red, pink, and orange pictures, but with the glasses on only the green objects will stand out.

To make the glasses cut out the frames from thin card, and attach to the lenses with craft glue. As I worked on A4 sheets of red plastic I then had to cut the frames out again, but you may only have to trim. Then cut two lengths of ribbon or cord, or one piece of elastic and attach it to the edges of the glasses with double sided tape or equivalent.

Show them the image of a tree first, they may spot some of the hidden items, most children will see the green items easier than the red ones even at this stage, don’t worry if that happens.

– If this is a game try asking them to find specific items. You could give one team glasses and the others not, or repeat the game with glasses.

– If you are having a discussion talk about how we don’t always see what matteres then hand out the ready made glasses, talk about how God changes our perspective.

– If this is a craft activity stick up the image on the wall as far away from the craft table as possible and get the kids to make their glasses and when wearing them to look at the picture again.

– If this is instead of a worksheet then combine all three, make a single pair of demonstration glasses and perhaps give out red and green pencils and challenge the kids to hide messages for each other.

The PDF of the tree image and glasses pattern can be downloaded by clicking HERE.

Zachaeus is today’s Bible hero because he shows us different sight.

Essential Teachers notes:
Sight in this card is simply about seeing, it’s not about future predictions.
Main Passage: Luke 19

—————————————-

Do you ever wish you were taller, imagine how much more you would see? The bible tells the story of a man who wished he was tall, his name was Zacchaeus, and he’s our bible hero for today.

Zacchaeus had a big job for a small man. Zachaeus collected tax from the people to send to the emperor. He would go round the houses with his scrolls and collect lots of money. People had to give Zacchaeua money for the emperor or they would get into trouble. When Zacchaeus wanted anything new he would charge people extra taxes and keep the money himself. It meant Zacchaeus had a nice house and lots of beautiful things, but he had no friends to share them with. The only people who liked Zacchaeus were the other tax collectors, and they weren’t very nice people either.

One day Jesus came to town. Huge crowds gathered to see him as he walked along the main street. Everyone had heard about Jesus, they knew he did amazing things, said amazing things, and everyone wanted to spend more time with him. Zacchaus went to see Jesus too, but everyone was so tall all he could see were other people cloaks.

Then Zachaeus had a clever idea, it was so clever he wished he could tell someone, but nobody would want to talk to him. Jesus was walking down the main road, and a little way along the road, right in the middle of the path, was a huge tree. Zacchaeus turned away from the crowd and ran to the tree. He pulled himself up on the branches and found somewhere he could sit and look down the road. He had a perfect view, he could already see a dark head of hair in the middle of the crowd that must be Jesus.

The crowd got closer and closer until Zacchaeus could not only see Jesus’ face but he could even hear some of the things he was saying. Jesus was walking straight towards the tree and he stopped right below Zacchaeus’ feet. Then he did the last thing Zacchaeus expected him to do, he looked right up at Zacchaeus.

“Come down Zacchaeus” said Jesus “I’m coming to your house to eat tonight!”

Zacchaeus was shocked. He ran down that tree as fast as he could. “hey Zacchaeus” he heard someone say, “would there be room for me too?”, and then someone else “and me, if it’s not too much trouble”, soon lots of people was asking Zachaeus if they could come.

Zacchaeus lead Jesus and his followers to his house, they sat down round the big guest table and Zacchaeus realised it was the first time his house had been full of people. Jesus started to talk and Zacchaeus saw for the first time that all his money had just made him miserable. He also saw that Jesus and his followers had something he didn’t, they saw the world in a different way than he did, and he wanted to see the world that way.

“I have an announcement” said Zacchaeus. “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”

Everybody cheered, Jesus had helped Zachaeus see the world differently. Jesus came to find and save the lost, Zachaeus had been lost in his money.

Zachaeus is today’s hero because he shows us different sight.

For this lesson I have 2 play posts. one is a specially modified game of eye spy. This one is the more usual collection of games. The games link with the themes; Vision, hiding, and sharing

Hide and seek – Traditionally it’s one of those games everyone knows, and if you have the space it’s great to play. I’d make sure you have a signal to say the game has ended. It ties in to the idea of Zacchaeus being hidden in the tree.

Boxed Limited view – you need a few cardboard boxes for this one. Punch a few small holes in the sides and then place a mystery object in the box. By shaking and peering through the holes the child has to identify the object.

Bucket logic – this is a simple logic problem great for older kids that can be found on the worksheet for Mary’s perfume. You need a large container of water and two different size containers – but not measuring jugs. You also need either scales or a measuring rod to determine the correct amount. Read the worksheet for more details. Don’t worry about being too exact with the measurements just add the capacity of the two containers together and divide by 2.

Unique 5 – this is a simple game for young children. Tell the children that they are all unique, and that that’s the way God made us. Children can be cruel about people being different and we don’t want to make that worse. The object of this game is to find 5 ways each child is unique, if you have a really large group split them in to smaller groups of it will take forever! When a child finds 5 things they don’t share with anyone else in the group then they receive a prize (a small sweet or biscuit is the usual choice)

Parachute limited view – a quiet parachute game. Sit round the parachute with your knees bent to the sky and your toes facing inwards. this should create a low canopy which a child can crawl under. place objects on the parachute and see if you can get the child to identify them. the children sitting around the edges will try and prevent this by moving the item or blocking the view from the middle hole.
