Boaz worksheet
This worksheet for Boaz is a good final review. It both explores the ideas presented in today’s story but also refers back to the stories in the previous 2 sessions. With dot to dot, or statements, discussion and text checking there is a mix of activities suitable for independent readers to work thorough in small groups.

To complete the worksheet you will need colouring pens or pencils, something to write with and a bible that includes the old testament.

The PDF can can be downloaded by clicking on the image.

Staying with our theme of shoes the last craft for this lesson are these sweet little paper shoes depicting Boaz and Ruth together.

John the baptist paper sandal

If you are looking for a more sandal like craft check out this threaded paper sandal used for the John the baptist lesson. (Image linked)

Print out the pdf. You’ll also need some scissors, glue, and colouring pencils. While the colour template is provided, if you have time this is one of the few crafts I’d recommend printing without colour and letting the kids add their own colour to their shoe.

For printing in Colour PDF – 1 page.
For printing with no Colour PDF – 1 page.

Unless you have cut the templates before the lesson… Colour before you cut out!

To make it into a shoe cut the one big shape along the outer line. There are a couple of slits in the heel that need to be cut down too!

See all those little glue tabs round the side, fold them over – all but the last 3 closest to the heel.

Fold down each side of the grey sole box and along the dotted lines on the big long tab coming from the heel, this will wrap over the top of the heel later.

Onto the gluing stage. First all those little tabs, they glue to the opposite side of the template to make a pocket. If you want a really smooth edge cut the flaps in 2! Do give it a second to dry before continuing as it gets tricky to glue back later.

Onto the heel! The dotted line shows the limit you can overlap the heel pieces, you don’t need to reach the limit! Add glue to one side and stick them together.

Complete the heel by taking the long thin strip and applying some glue along it. Glue it up over the outside of the heel and wrap the top over the edge.

Your shoe is complete, you may notice it’s for the right foot as the story involved a right shoe. If your kids wish to make one for the left foot too here is a blank template for them!

Blank template PDF – 1 page.

The story of Boaz and Ruth contains a few details that are both common and yet very significant. The idea of claiming, the importance of shoes, and the companionship of marriage are all themes found in the following game suggestions.

Walking shoes – This game works best with younger children and those with smaller feet. You’ll need a pile of adult shoes and a basic start and end line. Split the shoes into 2 piles (one from each pair) and have the kids take turns ‘walking’ the shoes from the start to the end line. Each child can take up to 4 shoes per turn (hands and feet) but each must walk across the floor, no carrying.

Match cards – Head over to this post and print out some flip and match card especially for this lesson. The set contains 7 sets of shoes alongside one Boaz card and one Ruth card… because they obviously made a pair!

Claim – This game illustrates the notion of claiming. Place a selection of containers on the table behind the children. Explain that each container represents a task, but don’t reveal which task is assigned to which container. Give each child 3 tokens to place in the container of their choice. Reveal the first task and randomly chose a token from the container. Now stop the game and explain that the person can claim the task or reject it… if they reject it then you will chose the next token. They can not change their minds. As you play make the positive and negative mixed – they must wear a stupid hat for 10 minutes, but the hat contains a piece of candy.

Sleepy Boaz – Play two games of sleeping lions – the children lay down and if they move then they are out. The first time play as normal but the second time round have everyone remove their socks and shoes. Get creative in ways bare feet may wake you up. A gentle tickle with a feather, fanning them, etc. The last payer could even be woken with an ice-cube!

or

Puzzle pieces – (repeated from Ruth lesson) Print out the images of Ruth and Boaz then snip them into puzzle pieces. Have the children make the puzzle before the story to introduce the characters. Want a longer game – hide the piece s round the room! Talk about uniting people.

These cards are always fun and so versatile! This little flip card ‘match up’ game is perfect for quiet play, basic craft or an extension activity. It features period relevant shoes not modern shapes which could lead to discussions about comfort and protection.

Includes 1 card of Boaz holding a shoe, 1 card of Ruth, and 7 sets of shoes.
(Ruth and Boaz are a match for each other!)

Print out the pdf on as heavy paper / card as your printer can manage. The backs have no lines so there is no chance of not lining up the printer correctly! If you don’t want to use the back design at all you can leave them blank or print on thick scrapbook paper. For thicker cards print on separate pages and sandwich the two with a piece of card between.

To use as craft / extension activity print without colour and have them colour them in!

For printing in Colour PDF – 2 pages
For printing with no Colour PDF – 2 pages

This story has a lot of parts and this craft is a great way to review each. I love working with acetate to create layers. Be sure to buy the correct acetate for your printer. The back of this craft also has questions and prompts to discuss once you’ve finished!

The pdf for this craft has 2 pages, be careful to print both pages at the same scale. Each child will need a copy of page 1 on paper or card, and half of page 2. Add to the printout – scissors, sticky tape, and a craft knife.

Please note: the acetate is only available in colour, print in grey-scale if needed. Also this craft does not have glue tabs.

For printing in Colour PDF – two pages
For printing background with no ColourPDF – one page

If you’ve chosen to print without colour then go and add some colour to the paper/card piece. Then start cutting : Carefully cut the acetate sheet along the black lines so you have 2 thin strips. From the paper/card cut out the two arrow shapes and the viewer.

Remove the two thin rectangles on the viewer using a craft knife.

Fold the viewer along the lines to form a triangle. Secure with a piece of sticky tape.

Attach both of the arrows to the ends of the acetate using sticky tape.

Thread the acetate and arrows through the slits. It’s quite a snug fit!

The craft is complete, just line up the pictures using the clue on the back. Then answer the question!

Make this craft shorter by printing in colour, easier by pre cutting the slits, or safer by using scissors for the slits not a craft knife.

Today’s hero is Boaz because he shows us the gift of A Shoe

Essential Teachers notes:
This story is an amalgamation of chapter 3 and 4 of the book of Ruth. The significance of uncovering feet and shameful presence of a woman on the threshing floor is skimmed over and instead the process of halitzah – literally ‘taking off’ of the shoe – alongside the scheming of Naomi and Boaz take centre stage. Halitzah is actually quite a shameful process and Boaz is kind to his kinsman by not bringing Naomi and Ruth to be part of the proceedings. This story may make the kids look at their shoes differently.

Main Passage : Ruth 4
Additional passages : Ruth 2, Deuteronomy 25: 5-10
—————————————-

Look at your shoes. Take off your right shoe and hold it in your hand. I wonder how valuable that shoe is for you, I wonder if it holds any meaning. Keep hold of your shoe while you learn about how a very ordinary old shoe changed our heroes lives.

Naomi had an idea. When men died they sometimes left behind land and money and family. A special Jewish law said that the closest relative could claim everything. But nobody had claimed Naomi and Ruth and so they were left to survive alone. Boaz was one of Naomi’s relatives and while he may not be the youngest, nor the most handsome, he would make a good husband for Ruth.

Ruth though Naomi’s idea was a good, but first she needed to talk to Boaz alone. Ruth went to find Boaz who was working on the harvest. She waited until bed time and when everyone else had fallen asleep she moved over to lay down by his feet. Then she moved the blanket off his feet so they would get cold. Is your foot getting cold? When Boaz’ feet got really cold, Boaz woke up and saw Ruth there. Boaz was surprised but listened as Ruth whispered Naomi’s idea.

He was really happy Ruth had chosen him, but there was a problem, Boaz wasn’t their closest relative. Quietly Boaz sent Ruth home, now he needed a plan. As everyone slept Boaz sat and thought about what he could do. He sat thinking until the sun rose into the sky and the other men around him started to wake up. The closest relative must have a reason why he hadn’t claimed Naomi and Ruth. What could it be? Finally Boaz had a plan. Boaz grabbed his cloak and walked to the town gate where the important men in the village would often gather. He settled himself on the ground just as the man he wanted to speak to came along.

“Come sit with me” said Boaz and the two men sat to talk as the others arrived around them.
“I hear Naomi is selling the land that belonged to her husband Elimelek” Boaz said in a loud voice.
It worked, everyone went quiet. Everyone was listening. That was a good piece of land.
Boaz turned to the man besides him, “I thought I should tell you. You could buy it right now, there are enough people here to witness. If you don’t want it, tell me. As her closest relative only you have the right to buy it, and I am next in line.”
Everyone was nodding their heads
“Oh yes. Yes I will take it” said the man eagerly
“Good, with the land comes with Naomi and Ruth the Moabite, the widows, so the name of Elimelek may continue.”
The mans face fell. The land was great, but a new wife would make his home very difficult, he had a family already.

Boaz knew the man did not want to have Ruth as his wife. He was trapped, if he wanted the land he would have to take Naomi and Ruth, if he said no to the women he would lose the land too. Boaz had made sure there were lots of people to watch so the man had to make a decision. The man slowly shook his head, “No, no I can’t take all that” he said with a sigh“it, it would not be good, you can have it”

Boaz smiled, he watched as the man took off his right shoe as a symbol. Usually the widow would take off the shoe and spit in the face of the relative who refused to claim her and look after her, but Boaz was being kind. He had tricked the man into making a decision and didn’t want to embarrass him too. He took the shoe and showed it to the crowd. Then in a loud voice he said “ You have seen, today I have claimed Naomi and the land of Elimelek, also Ruth the Moabite, his sons’s widow, as my wife, in order to continue his family name!” Everybody cheered.

Boaz went and found Naomi and Ruth, he showed them the shoe and took them to his house. Boaz and Ruth has a son called Obed, and Obed was the grandfather of the great King David, and King David was the great great …well a lot of greats… grandfather to Jesus.

Today’s hero is Boaz because he shows us the gift of A Shoe
