For this craft you will need the PDF printout (1 page per child), scissors, & a glue stick. THERE ARE NO INSTRUCTIONS ON THIS PRINTOUT.
NB:I used thin card for the photographed version to make it bolder, but paper actually works better.

For printing with No Colour PDF – one page

Cut everything out and score the fold lines. You can skip scoring but it really does make a big difference.

Time to get folding. Make those concertina’s and don’t forget to fold the glue tabs too.

If you wish to add the characters you need to add the base support to the top now. Add glue to the top 1cm of the small concertina and glue it to the big concertina.

Glue it to the big concertina, with the overlap being about 1.5cm.

Fold back into shape and take a moment to even out your concertina. Then turn it over.

Add glue to the tabs on the two long white strips. These will be the supports for your concertina with the glue tabs attached on the back in each corner.

lastly add some glue to the two remaining glue tabs on the small concertina and stick on your characters!

It takes a bit of manoeuvring but if you look closely you can find both question and answer. this is deliberately a bit of a challenge, the question was tough after all!

The Pharisees and Sadducees, two groups we love to paint as the bad guys, but amongst the bad apples were men seeking God, even if they were misguided. These games don’t play them as the bad guys, but rather as questioners, inquisitive about Jesus, even if their motivation wasn’t in the right place.

Riddles – Tough questions naturally link into riddles, if the kids have any of their own get them to share, if not then try this list https://www.kidspot.com.au/things-to-do/activities/10-easy-riddles-for-kids of 10 easy riddles for children.

or

Too many rules – For this game you’ll probably need a whiteboard or a big sheet of paper to write the rules. tell the children they can help you make the rules for the game. start with these 3 rules. 1. each child must take it in turns to say a nursery rhyme or equivalent. 2. each child must try and follow as many rules as possible. 3. if the child completes the task they may add another rule.(example, first child recites “Hickory dickory dock” then adds the rule you must hold your thumb to your nose, second child recites “Incey Wincey Spider” then adds that you must use a squeaky voice …etc)

Only 2 – This is a puzzle that’s ambiguity makes it easy. Put the kids into small groups and leave them to discuss these scenario – They need to travel to the south pole but they can only take 2 things with them, what 2 things would they take? let the kids feedback. good answers could be other people, forms of transport, warm clothes… great answers would be infinite money, a teleporter, renaming the next room the south pole etc.

How do I measure up? – there are loads and loads of commandments in the bible, many are linked to the place and times they were written for. As a way of understanding the Pharisee’s obsession with rules it’s good to look at some of the more obscure. This is an activity for the older children only. Developmentally younger children can not be expected to rationalise this activity and may take it as self failure. Have the children stand up and sit down when they hear a rule they have broken.

1. Eating a cheeseburger or anything that mixes meat and dairy (Exodus 23:19).
2. Performing any work on the Sabbath (Exodus 20:10).
3. Ignoring a judge or a priest (Deuteronomy 17:8–13).
4. Wearing clothing woven of more than one kind of cloth (Leviticus 19:19).
5. Touching meat from a pig (Deuteronomy 14:8).
6. Cutting the hair on the sides of your head (Leviticus 19:27).
7. To be merciful and loyal to God (Hosea 6)
8. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind
9. Love your neighbour as you love yourself

Jesus quoted the last 3. Why do you think Jesus considers these more important? Do you think Jesus expects us to not break these rules ever, or just try our best?

Question treasure hunt – This is a lovely simple activity but it does take some time to set up. Children search and find a question whose answer tells them where to find the next piece of treasure, alongside the piece of treasure (a jigsaw piece works well) is another question whose answer is the location of the next piece of treasure and so on. Link to questions leading to truths.

Add whatever extra decoration you wish then cut out the 4 pieces. There is extra background behind the Sadducee’s and Jesus’ head to make your cutting easier, older children can remove this if they wish.

Time to get folding. The long strip goes into a box tube by folding along the dotted lines.

The 2 speech bubble supports have their tabs folded so the point goes towards the bubble.

Take the bubble piece with Jesus’ answer on it and add glue to the side of the tab with no printing. This will be attached to the very middle section of the strip.

The flat edge of the bubble piece should lay flush with the top of the strip and the fold’s should meet at the top.

The other bubble piece is added in reverse on the back of the blank end strip section

Add your characters by adding glue onto the middle part of the white area, being careful not to glue outside the fold lines.

Lastly add glue to the outside blank end strip section and connect your tube. you’ll need to fold your speech bubble support up to add the glue! If you find the mechanism sticks try sliding the flaps so they are resting on the opposite sides of each other.

Today’s heroes are the Pharisee and Sadducee because they show us the gift of Questions

Essential Teachers notes:
Children are far too familiar with questions, they can be good or bad, they can hold promises or expectations or traps. It’s both encouraging and reassuring therefore to teach this lesson about Jesus being faced with tough questions and to look into his answers. Be sure to follow up with some open questions that may have a right answer and a wrong answer as well as a best answer.

Main Passage : Matthew 22
Additional passages : Exodus 3.

Jesus was making a lot of noise, lots of people were gathering wherever he went, people were chatting about him in the streets, passing on his stories and his teaching. It made the religious leaders very nervous.

There were lots of types of religious leaders, there were those who followed all the rules, even making up new rules, they were called the Pharisees. Some of the Pharisees liked Jesus, but most of them didn’t. Jesus broke the rules and so they didn’t want people to follow his example. If they started breaking some rules where would they stop?

Another group of religious leaders were called the Sadducees. There weren’t so many of them and they liked to think they were the most important. Being a religious leader made them rich and powerful. Some of the Sadducees were puzzled by Jesus’ wise teachings, but many hated Jesus because he made them look greedy for money and power.

Jesus had to be stopped, they had to find a problem with his teaching, one they could use to prove he was wrong and they were right. So they made a plan. They would ask Jesus some questions that didn’t have a right answer.

A Pharisee went first… “Teacher, we know that you are an honest man and that you teach the truth about God’s way. So tell us what you think. Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
The crowd gasped, Jesus was trapped.
Everybody hated taxes. If Jesus said ‘yes it is right to pay taxes’ the people would hate him.
If he said “no, it’s not right” the authorities would come and arrest him and put him in jail.
Jesus knew what they were doing, he knew it was a trap. Jesus picked up a coin and looked at it. On one side was a number and on the other was a picture of someone. “who is this?” said Jesus quietly. “Caesar” came the answer, “oh?” replied Jesus. Then in a loud voice he said “Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and give to God the things that are God’s.”
The crowd gasped, Jesus was free.

As the Pharisee seemed to have failed a Sadducee tried. “ Teacher, imagine a woman marries and her husband dies, so she marries again, and the husband dies again, and this happens many times. Whose wife will she be when people rise from the dead”
The crowd gasped, Jesus was trapped.
Many people married again, and their marriages were just as important as each other. How could Jesus pick just one?
But, Jesus knew his scriptures better than this Sadducee. So he started to tell the story of Moses meeting God, when God had said: “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” the Sadducee looked puzzled until Jesus added “God is the God of the living, not the dead.” God had said “I am” not “I was”.
The crowd gasped, Jesus was free.

As the Sadducee had failed another Pharisee tried once again. This Pharisee was an expert on scripture and the law. “which commandment is the most important he asked.
Jesus smiled. He liked this question. There were hundreds of commandments to choose from and they were all important but he knew just 2 would cover everything. Jesus answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and most important command. And the second command is like the first: ‘Love your neighbour as you love yourself.’” The crowd was silent, every single law could be simplified to one of these two sentences. Even the Pharisee looked impressed.

Jesus had had enough of hem trying to trap him. He was happy to answer their questions but they didn’t really want to know the answers, they wanted to trip him up. So he asked them a question about the scripture which nobody could answer, embarrassed they left him alone. I wonder what things about God you would like to ask Jesus?

Today’s heroes are the Pharisee and Sadducee because they show us the gift of Questions

Short version:
Jesus was making a lot of noise. Lots of people were gathering wherever he went. People were chatting about him in the streets, passing on his stories and his teaching. It made the religious leaders very nervous.

There were lots of types of religious leaders. There were those who followed all the rules, even making up new rules; they were called the Pharisees. Some of the Pharisees liked Jesus, but most of them didn’t. Jesus broke the rules; so they didn’t want people to follow his example. If they started breaking some rules, where would they stop?

Another group of religious leaders were called the Sadducees. There weren’t so many of them, and they liked to think they were the most important. Being a religious leader made them rich and powerful. Some of the Sadducees were puzzled by Jesus’s wise teachings, but many hated Jesus because he made them look greedy for money and power.

Jesus had to be stopped. They had to find a problem with his teaching, one they could use to prove he was wrong and they were right. So, they made a plan. They would ask Jesus some questions that didn’t have a right answer.

First, a Pharisee tried to trap Jesus with a question on taxes, but Jesus was too clever to be trapped so easily. Then, a Sadducee tried to trap Jesus with a question about marriage, but Jesus made him look foolish! As the Sadducee had failed, another Pharisee tried once again. This Pharisee was an expert on scripture and the law. “Which commandment is the most important?” he asked.

Jesus smiled. He liked this question. There were hundreds of commandments to choose from and were all important, but he knew just two would cover everything. Jesus answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and most important command. And the second command is like the first: ‘Love your neighbour as you love yourself.’” The crowd was silent. Every single law could be simplified to one of these two sentences. Even the Pharisee looked impressed.

Jesus had had enough of them trying to trap him. He was happy to answer their questions, but they didn’t really want to know the answers; they wanted to trip him up. So, he asked them a question about the scripture, which nobody could answer. Embarrassed, they left him alone. I wonder what things about God you would like to ask Jesus?
