A while back I made these lovely twisty arm people for the Abram and Lot lessons and Tabitha’s character seemed perfect to bring the idea back for. They are quite plain so as to let the little fashion designers creativity loose!

Print out one page per child. You also need scissors, sticky tap and paper glue.

Step by step instructions for putting together the body are [here], the only read difference is the lack of a belt replaced by black lines and the accessories.

Make the basic structure first, this could be used for just about any character!

I’ve added hair and decorations to cut and stick on, however you may prefer to break out the craft supplies – sequins, craft papers and beads work well!

Cut around the boxes. If you have older children who wish to cut around the dress that will work too. you do not need to use all the outfits.

Fold the dresses pieces along the dotted lines working the fold both ways.

With the picture on the inside add glue to one half of a dress piece and attach another to the back. open out to check positioning and repeat until you have attached all the small piece together.

Open out the two end pieces and add glue to both then position on the background using the neckline as reference.

If your children have cut the dresses (and not the boxes) then the background dress should help you to position easily.

Open up you creation and flip between outfits.

Take some time to explain that one dress only has a heart because it was Tabitha’s heart for kindness that made her known and loved.

Tabitha Dorcas worksheet
This worksheet about Tabitha used discussion and self reflection to look at the character of Tabitha and how she was viewed. It then asks the really tough question about why God chose her to be resurrected. Ending with a maze and a drawing challenge it is suitable for independent readers and above. This worksheet would be suitable as both an individual time filler, or a group exploration and discussion piece.

To complete the worksheet you will need something to write and draw with, some colouring pens or pencils and a bible.

It’s easy to take the story of Tabitha the dressmaker and use it as an excuse to dress up, and while some of these games acknowledge that, the real power in the story is the influence this very ordinary woman had and how her resurrection built a strong local church in a multi ethnic area.

Puzzle Cards – These puzzle cards (click on image for post) are great for introducing the character image and the idea of Tabitha as a dressmaker. There are so many ways to use these cards, as puzzles, as a pairs type game, as a treasure hunt or as a way to identify the real Tabitha by removing one piece from each puzzle except one. If you want a more formal card game try dealing each child 5 cards and have them return 2. Shuffle the returned cards and deal 2 to each child until someone finds a whole set.

or

Name scramble – Names are important in the bible and characters who have 2 names mentioned like Tabitha (Dorcas) do so for a good reason, it shows that her area was multi ethnic and multi lingual. In this game you are trying to build a name by searching for letters. When the children arrive write their names on small squares of paper, one letter at a time. Drop the letters into a large tub filled with rice or some other filling material like shredded paper. Have the kids dig out the letters until you build a name. Substitute the paper for fridge magnet letters or similar if you are sure of your kids in advance. Talk about how a name is only one way of identifying people.

Costume obstacle race – kids love obstacle races and this one has a Tabitha twist by making them dress up as they go along. After each obstacle place a piece of clothing (hats, gloves and tunics work well) that must be worn. Talk about how we all need clothing and how we choose what we wear to reflect who we are.

Call Peter – Peter was a busy disciple, he had been very close to Jesus and now the new followers of Jesus’ teaching kept calling him to go visit them. This is basically the game better known as ‘stick in the mud’ where one troublemaker tags people and then they can’t move, Peter must come tag them before they can move again.

We love you because – This is a lovely exercise for a more established group. Write each persons name on a piece of paper and put them in a hat (container). Have each child come pull a name from the hat and say something they like / admire / love about that person. Link to looking at why Tabitha had a big influence on the community.

Today’s hero is Tabitha / Dorcas because she shows us the gift of Influence.

Essential Teachers notes:
Tabitha is a dangerous lesson, it’s a dangerous lesson not only because it suggests the awesome amount of power God bestows upon his followers, the influence a simple working woman who held a non-ministry position can have, or the way a single event can transform a community… but it suggests that we too can do the miraculous. Death is a dark subject to talk to youngsters about, it’s the end of a chapter and it’s a painful reminder to us all of loss. Suggesting that resurrection is something within our grasp could lead to some awkward discussions about why God allows the things we love to die. While this may be painful it can also be a powerful tool for teaching youngsters that God is able to step into even the most hopeless situation.

Main Passage : Acts 9
Additional passages : general gospel

—————————————-
Today’s story is lovely, and it’s sad, and it’s happy, and it’s wonderful… I wonder, do you have moments that are all those things, lovely moments, sad moments, happy moments and wonderful moments?

Today’s story is about a woman who made clothes. She was very good at making clothes. She lived near the town of Joppa and in Joppa people spoke different languages, some people called her by her Hebrew name of Tabitha, other people called her by her Greek name of Dorcas, but everyone loved her. I wonder if you can guess why they loved her?

Because she was talented and made beautiful clothes… nope. Her clothes were beautiful but that’s not the reason.
They loved her because she was kind. the bible tells us that Tabitha was always doing good and helping the poor.
Tabitha loved Jesus and though she’d never met him she knew that Jesus would want her to be kind, so she was! Isn’t that lovely!

But then something really sad happened. Tabitha got sick. Tabitha died. Her friends came to her house and cried. Tabitha’s body lay on the bed waiting to be buried. Tabitha wouldn’t have the chance to be kind again. Tabitha was on her way to heaven to meet Jesus. Everyone was really sad.

Nearby the apostle Peter, one of Jesus’ friends who used to travel with Jesus was telling people all about his travels when some people rushed into the room and asked him to come see Tabitha. Why do you think they had come?
Perhaps when they left the house Tabitha hadn’t died and they hoped Peter would heal her?
Perhaps they wanted Peter to pray with Tabitha’s friends? We don’t know.
But it was important to them that Peter came to see Tabitha, so Peter did.

When Peter got there he went into the room with Tabitha’s body and all her friends crying. They wanted to show Peter the beautiful clothes Tabitha had made but Peter wanted to pray so he sent them all outside.

Peter knelt down by the bed and started to talk to God, he started to chat with his good friend Jesus all about Tabitha. And Jesus told him to do something crazy. Jesus told him to look at Tabitha and say out loud “Tabitha, get up.” Peter paused, Tabitha couldn’t get up, Tabitha had died, he went back to praying but he heard Jesus tell him again to look at Tabitha and say out loud “Tabitha, get up.” so Peter did. And do you know what happened…

Tabitha opened her eyes and looked straight back at Peter’s face. She knew just who he was and sat up on the bed. Peter put his hands out towards her and she grabbed them to help her stand up. Tabitha was alive. Jesus had used Peter to bring Tabitha back from the dead. Everything sad had turned to happy, to amazing, to wonderful.

Peter led Tabitha outside to her friends. They started to celebrate the miracle of what had happened. But the celebration didn’t stop there. Because everyone in Joppa knew Tabitha, the kind lady who made beautiful clothes, everyone joined in the celebration. Then everyone asked about this Peter and the Jesus he and Tabitha followed. Soon the church in Joppa was huge.

Tabitha didn’t work for a church, she didn’t run any big event or write a book or preach a sermon or have a powerful position, she was just kind to everyone. But because of Tabitha lots and lots of people got to know about Jesus.

Today’s hero is Tabitha / Dorcas because she shows us the gift of Influence.

These simple cards can be used in so many ways with different age groups. They all use the image of Tabitha / Dorcas though all are coloured slightly differently to show off the wonderful clothes that Tabitha made.

Print out both pages of the pdf and you’ll need some scissors too.

For printing in Colour PDF – 2 pages
For printing with no Colour please use grayscale.

Cut the cards whole to start with. Use them at this size to play a pairs game, just print an extra set out.

get cutting along those dotted lines.

Make them into puzzles by splitting in half for very young children or in quarters for slightly older groups. Hide the pieces or even remove one piece from each puzzle except one.

If you’ve split every card into 4 why not try a card game. deal each child 5 cards and have them return 2. shuffle the returned cards and deal 2 to each child until someone finds a whole set.
